Schinz (above), deputy wing commander of the 51 st fighter interceptor wing, has been missing since an air battle over northwestern Korea (May 1 ) , the Fifth Air Force has announced. Schinz, 33, of Ottawa, III., disappeared in a fight with communist MG-15 jets in MIG alley, the Air Force said. (Air Force Photo via AP Wirephoto) Lacquer Thinner Jag Leads To Prison Fight SALEM I One convict was stabbed in the back and slightly wounded in a brawl that developed .at the Oregon State Penitentiary Thursday when some 20 Inmates got drunk on lacquer thinner. Prison Warden Virgil O'Malley (aid no guards saw the brawl and the convict who wielded the knife was not known. He did not identify the victim but said he was not burt seriously. The thinner was stolen from a machine shop and commissary. The convicts drank it and soon started fighting, O'Malley said. Several gallons of thinner were re covered. The thyroid gland consists of two lobes, one on each side of the trachea (windpipe) just below and anterior to the larynx or voice box with a connecting isthmus or channel. It weighs approximately o? ounce, and is composed of a large number of tiny closed sacks or vesicles and these are filled with a rnaterial commonly called "colloid." It is richly supplied with blood vessels and this colloid ma terial which apparently contains the hormone secreted by the gland la believed to be secreted into the blood stream within the gland. Any enlargement of the thyroid gland, except of an inflammatory or malignant character. Is termed a goiter. Simple goi'crs are not accompanied by constitutional symptoms. They are said to oc cur more frequently In certain re gions of the earth far from the ocean or shielded from ths sea breezes by high mountains. Sea water contains relatively hifh con centrations of iodine and it is gen erally stated that the lack of io dine In the drinking water and foods in these regions is associat ed with the prevalence of this con dition. The hormone secreted by the gland contains iodine. In fact, more than half of all the iodine In the body is concentrated in the thyroid. This relationship of iodine to the thyroid has long been known, and ioiine has been used in the treatment of simple goi'er for over a conury. Neet, clcmontary princi pal of Myrtle Creek District 19 C schools, has been elevated to the position of superintendent of schools for that district. Announcement of the school board's action Thursday night was made by Mahlon C. "Mike" Deller, superintendent, who has resigned, effective July 1, to take a similar position as head of Roseburgs schools. Neet has served as elementary principal the last three years. A native of Oregon, he was born in Eugene, and ws graduated from Lowell High School. He was gradu ated from Oregon College of Edu cation at Monmouth with a B.S. Degree In 1946. Before coming to Myrtle Creek, he taught three years at Albany. He Is now taking graduate work with the University of Oregon. During the war he served three years in the navy, in radar work. 7 Neet takes over a district with 1300 students and 56 teachers. The schools are in the midst of a build ing program and the organization of a cafeteria, built last fall, but used this cirrent year for class rooms. It will be available for use as intended with completion of the new grade school at Tri-City. Deller complimented the Myr tle Creek board upon the selection of Neet, whom he said has been popular with the faculty and is a strong Parent-Teachers Associa tion worker. He is president of the Western Oregon Elementary Prin cipals Association. Ncet's wife, Eleanor, also teach es in the Myrtle Creek Schools. W.W. Srowe Funeral Service Date Changed Funeral services for Walter Westing Stowe, 53, who died Thurs day at his home at Sutherlin, will be held Sunday at 1:30 p.m. standard time, Instead of Monday, as previously announced. The services will be held at the Suth erlin Methodiit Church with the Rev. Robert Fell officiating. In terment will be in Valley View Cemetery, Sutherlin. Stearns Mor tuary is in charge. Stowe, a veteran of World War I, had resided in Sutherlin for 24 years. of growth. In human beings a sim ilar effect is seen when the thyroid is non-functioning at birth. The re sulting condition is termed cretin ism. Cretins are abnormal dwarfs. They frequently have bowed legs, thick skin, and coarse hair. Al though they mtiy grow to adult- 'hood, they do not develop men tally. The sex organs remain Ismail and the abdomen becomes distended.. In the adult and clini cal condition of hypothyroidism or lack of thyroid secretion is known as myxedema. In these cases the j individual changes somewhat in appearance, the skin becomes j thick and puffy and there tend to lb? swellings under the eyes. Al though general intelligence is not impaired, the person is slower in ! thinking as well as in movements. There is a slowed metabolic rate, an increased deposition of fat, with 'almost all functions usually dimin ished. The influence of the thyroid up on the metabolism is more evi ident in cases of increased func tion. In this type of glandular dis senter the metabolic rale Increases ! considerably above the normal ' figures, eighty percent above nor ma! is not unusual. Consequently ; more food is consumed, in spite of which a loss of weight usually ! occurs. The person often feels hot because of the increased heat pro duction. Somo other symptoms are excitement, and irritability. There is also an increase in the pulse 'rale and an extra load put upon the heart which must compensate 'for this condition. ! The thyroid gland Is slightlv ' larger in women than in men. In girls during the puberal period, temporary enlargement is com mon. This gland also undergoes physiological enlargement at men .stnial time and during pregnancy. I (I'd. Wells enlisted in January of this year and has just completed his recruit training ot San Dieqo, Calif. Upon reoorting back to San Diego, Wells expects to re ceive orders to the U.S.S. Eisen hower said Friday night that If the people like Ike for President "they will know whee to find me" but repeated that he has no intention of camnaigning for the Republican nomination. Oslo was Eisenhower's last stop on the Scandinavian leg of his fare well tour as Supreme Allied Com mander. His assignment ends June 1 and he plans to return to the United States then to be available if he Is nominated by the Repub lican convention in July. He said he will resign his ge eral's commission if he is nomi nated so that he can speak without hindrance. Graves seeks court action for his claimed share of the assets of a dissolved lumber partnership in a Circuit Court suit. Named defendants are Wilbur H. and Merle D. Rappe, the other two partners in the former Graves and Rappe Brothers Lumber Co. He alleged that since the com pany was dissolved, the Rappe brothers have retained the com pany books and a large amount of the assets. In his complaint. Grav es wants an accounting of the assets and a judgment for his share. In another suit, Ray and Opal Fitzgerald seek recovery of $1,929. 39 allegedly owed by Clara R. Dav is on a promissory note. Queen's Committee Will Host Princesses The official queen's committee of the Douglas County Centennial will act as official reception com mittee on th: night of May 16. when all contestants will appear before the public for the first time, announced Sid Moon, president of the local Junior Chamber of Com merce, sponsors of this event. To start the festivities, each contestant will be presented a white gardenia head band for her hair. A direct broadcast of the event is planned, and, according to Moon, the largest crowd ever to attend a dance at the armory is expected. Civil Bend Cemetery Clean-Up Day Designated The Civil B"nd Cemetery Assn. has designated May 20, 21 and 22 as clean-up period for the cem etery at Winston. The work is contemplated in preparation for Memorial Day May 30. Officers of the association, re elected for the 1952-53 year are Oliva Landers, president; Stella Bohme, secretary; and the follow ing board members Bob Kleist, chairman; Anna Agee, Anna French, Maude Cooper and Earl Parker. TWO FORFEIT BAIL Clarence Dale Myers, Camas Valley Route, Roseburg, and Clif ford Leroy Nelson, 415 Lane St., arrested by city police on drunk charges, forfeited $200 bail by their failure to appear in municipal court Monday in answer to the charges, reported Judge Ira B. James Brown, Sutherlin, suf fered minor cuts when the car he was drivin? was forced off the road near Sutherlin about 8 p.m. Officers said he went off the road to avoid hitting a motorycycle op erated by John Allen Evans, Brownsville, Ore. James Walter Shell, 25, Camas Valley Star Route, was cited for basic rule violation after an ac cident in which his car skidded into a guard rail and overturned tw'ce about m'dnVeht a mile and a half south of Roseburg. Truck Detour Bridge "Job Near Glendale Slated WorkTvill start Monday on con struction of a pole bridge for use as a truck detour from the Cow Creek bridge three miles east of Glendale. The temporary bridge will be just below the other. County Commissioner Elmer Metzger said the work is expected to be finished in three er four days. Meanwhile the Cow Creek Bridge will be open to light traf fic until replacement work begins this summer. Classes Planned Here By State Nutritionist Mrs. Robert Stein, state nutri tionist, will be in Roseburg Mon day to discuss nutrition needs of mothers and children at the sec ond of the mothers classes. She will speak to a mothers class at 2:30 p.m. in the confer ence room of the Junior High School. The class will be open to the public. , Admiral Cruise's Son Killed In Plana Crash SAX DIEGO, Calif., 11 An admiral's son was identified as th -pilot killed in 3 Navy plane crash fnday. - He was Lt. JG Edgar A. Cruise Jr., 25. The Navy said he was the son of Rear Adm. Edgar A. Cruise Sr. commander of the 17th Naval dis trict, Kodiak, Alaska. Lt. Cruise, who lived in bachelor quarters at the North Island Naval Air Base here, died when his pan ther jet plane crashed and set fire to timber and brush hetwen San Juan Capistrano and Elsinore, Calif., approximately 65 mint north of here.
