Strand, president of Oregon State College, will be the guest speaker at the annual Home makers' Festival to be held Fri day, May 9, at the First Metho dist Church in Roseburg, an nounced Betty J. Paterson, county extension agent, home economics. Dr. Strand will speak on "Home life in the Philippines." He spent several months In the Philippines while on a special agricultural commission for President Truman and during that time he learned much about the Filipinos, their customs, their way of life and their activities. Dr. Strand took many colored slides which he will show during his talk. The women of the home exten sion units in Douglas County will model the dresses they made in their Better Dress Workshops dur. ing the past month. Their dresses are made of rayon, linen and silk materials and are dressy-type aft ernoon dresses. Miss Paterson conducted pro ject leader training workshops during the month of March. The trained leaders then returned to their own communities and con ducted workshops for their neigh bors and unit members. They were taught the newest and sim plest methods of making dresses with emphasis on the profesionai appearance of the garments. Next year the women will learn to sew on woolen fabrics. About 150 wom en participated in the Better Dress Workshops. Miss Murle Scales, clothing spe cialist, Oregon State College, will represent the college. Special musical selections from the operetta the "Mikado," will be performed by the children from the Dillard School. There will al so be group singing and many other special activities. The Homemakers' Festival Is open to the public and everyone is invited to attend. There is no charge for admission. The regis tration commences at 10:00 a.m., standard time. Each home extension unit Is in charge of an exhibit or an ac tivity for the festival. The work shown is that done during the year by the unit members. Exhib its will be on display during the lunch hour. Luncheon will be serv ed by the women of the Me'ho dist Church with Mrs. R. L. Whip ple as chairman.
