Idleyld Park Sector Bustling With Highway Building, Utility Changes The North Umpqua district around Idleyld Park is a busy place these days. All apartments, cabins and houses avail ble for rental in the Glide-Idleyld communities are filled. About the only solution for housing now is the securing of a trailer house. Reasons for the activity: The Funderburk Construction Company has a contract for relocating the North Umpqua Highway from Lone Rock Bridge to Mcs Place; the Kuckenburg Company has started completion of its contract on re location of the highway from Mcs place east to Susan Creek, and the Rush Construction Co. has estab lished a rock crushing plant at DeBernardi quarry to supply rock for the highway. the Public Roads Administration has established its camp near Rock Creek and has a 12-man I uuaiuuig at luieyiu ruin 1 nrlttA nn,tti r It 1.1 engineer, living at Hill Creek, is in charge of the PRA crew. Mrs. Mcrel Waldtrip of Roseburg is a J new cook at Idleyld Park Lodge. Decause oi ine relocation oi ine North Umpqua Highway, California Oregon Power Company has to change its poles and lines. It's crews are working from Lone Rock Bridge to Rock Creek area, ' and residents along the way are 1 becoming accustomed to having 1 their electricity shut off at various ' hours of the day as power is halted , tor change over of the lines. Copco has a clearing crew with eauip- i ment at work, as the poles are set I outside the new highway line re- i I quiring additional clearing. Pacific Telephone Company Is : extending its line from Johnny's tavern to the Hock Creek area. I The telephone company is using 1 Copco poles to string its lines. However, the telephone lines are swung hammock fashion almost midway between the poles, which requires additional clearing by the telephone company, especially for phone service to residents north of the highway. Copco poles are only being changed on new highway. The telephone company has a clearing crew of experienced men trom HUlsboro operating here. For example, this crew of six men spent six days clearing through the timber from the Selbv resi dence to the homes of Harry Kin near and Mrs. Charles E. Miller for installation of two nhones them. Eight telephone company emnlov- i ees occupy the hotel rooms above Idleyld Park Cafe, owned by Clyde naiKins. Traffic Slowed Down The Idleyld Park Lodee. There is deep, slip pery mud when it rains, and dust is thick ai a London fog when the weather is clear. But tire vision of the new scenic highway gives heart to the residents of the community who must undergo these tribula tions of progress. They might be termed modern pioneers. At Bill Wendts' North Umppqua Tues., April 29, 1952 Th Newt-Rovltw, Rosoburg, Ore. 3 New Try Begun To End Rail Unions' Dispute WASHINGTON W The White House announced Saturday that ne gotiations aimed at settling a two year dispute between the nation's seized railroads and three big un ions have been under way for the "last several days." Dr. John R. Steelman, acting defense mobilizer and long-time la bor mediator for President Tru man, met separately with union chiefs and heads of three major carrier groups Friday and Satur day at the White House. The unions are the engineers, the conductors and the firemen, with a total mem bership of about 150,000. There was no official progress report, but union sources predicted "agreement of some kind" within two weeks. (Herzo? is with McCulley): Mr. and Mrs. E. C.
