SPRINS HAS ITS CHILLY Price) Controls Lifted From 16 Commodities WASHINGTON IX The govern ment Tuesday suspended price con trols on 16 commodities and said it will decide soon whether ceil ings can be set aside for raw cotton, textiles and apparel. The Office of Price Stabiliza tion announced the suspension and fixed exact points at which con trols automatically will be restored, if prices should rise sharply. The commodity ireas affected include raw wool and related fibers, cattle hides, burlap, and some fats and oils. Price Director Ellis Arnall re ported to the Senate Banking Committee that these products have been selling at substantially below ceiling prices for some time. Therefore, he said, OPS feels the market currently is stabilized. Americans Learn To Cease Worrying Over Atom Bomb As Dread Of Conflict Dies By HAL BOYLE NEW YORK (AP) America has learned to live with the atom bomb. The final proof of this was the televising of the latest Explosion in Nevada. There was a mixed reaction to the a-bomb's video debut Taken purely in terms of sound, many viewers found it less awe-inspiring than the vocal chords of Milton Berle. "It looks like a closeup of .liinmy Durante," one spectator comment ed. Others felt it still had a long way to go before it would seriously rival Arthur Godfrey. And some, who dialed in the demonstration late, mistook the gigantic smoke puff for a new kind of cigaret ad. But the mere fact that millions of housewives could sit i n their living rooms and calmly watch an atom bomb burst shows how much the public has lost its fear of this frightful weapon. Even five years ago a this kind might have stirred up storm of protest. People had an unreasoning panic about the atom iomb then. Many parents objected to radio discussions of it, saying it created hysteria in their chil dren. At that time the bomb was ac tvely feared as an instrument that could and might well be expected to wipe out civilization. It would be interesting to know how many families bought remote mountain hideaways, or secretly stored food caches in caverns against the possibility of the out break of a disastrous world-wide atom war. It was done. Dread Dying Down But recently, despite the an nouncement of three atomic explo sions in Soviet Russia, the national dread of atomic conflict has died down. The scare wave has sub sided. One reason is that five years ago it was accepted as a certainty that a new war would be heralded by a rain of atom bombs. But fighting has gone on for 22 months in Korea without the em ployment of these devastating bombs by eit'ner side. Hope is growing that they never may be used again in anger.
