Herbert Hoover Jibes At Irksome Stuff On Radio Greyhound Bus Strike Interferes With Draft SAN FRANCISCOtB-The m0nth old Pacific Greyhound bus strike may be annoying to thousands in seven affected Western states but there have been no complaints from prospective draftees in Cali fornia. In Marin County, Mrs. Georgia Byron, county draft board clerk, said the buses were the only means of mass transportation, and with out them draftees could not be taken to San Francisco for induc tion. The county draft call was cancelled for April. And State Selective Service Di rector Kenneth H. Leltch said the same policy will apply for other areas served only by Greyhound. The strike, meanwhile, dragged into its 34th day. Company and union officials met again with Fed eral Conciliator Omar Hoskins. The bus drivers and station em ployes are demanding a five-day week plus wage increases. Atomie Board To Ask $5 Billion Increase NEW YORK I The chief of the Atomic Energy Commission says Congress is going to be askd to expand atomic production to tlie tune of five billion dollars. Commission Chairman Gordon Dean said Thursday night that Con gress would be asked to authorize possibly "the largest construction task that industry has been asked to perform." The proposed program would take place "over a period of sever al years," he said at a dinner of the Greater New York Safety Coun cil. Dean said the United States is engaged "in a life-and-death race with the Soviet Union in the man ufacture of atomic weapons." He said he couldn't "say very much about out weapons program," but he added: "I can say that one very good measure of the quality of our weap ons research contractors is the number of tests we hold. NEW YORK Wl Former Presi dent Herbert Hoover says the world has received "infinite blessings" because of Dr. Lee De Forest, in ventor of i vacuum tube necessary for radio and television. But the former president adds that De Forest "has some grave matters to answer for. He has made it possible to transmit the worst music on earth and polit ical speeches." "Perhaps," Hoover adds, "the worst of his results is the singing commercial that plugs in when we try to get the news. And then there is the fellow who cannot sponsor a program without periodic inter ruption of huckster chatter into the midst of an inspiring musical pres entation of a great drama." The 77-year-old former president turned1 to this bit of whimsy Tues day night as he spoke at a testi monial dinner for De Forest. Hoover said De Forest could "re deem" himself "if he would pro duce another great invention. . . The pushbutton by which we could transmit our emotions instantly back to the broadcasters." "It would explode our feelings over the air, instead of having their Inner gnawing of our morals," Hoover added. Church Of The Naxarene Plans Easter Services Easter Services at the Church of the Natarene will be observed by a unified service startng at 9:43 a.m. Sunday school pupils will pre sent a program. Two outstanding numbers will be the Easter story given in pantomime by the junior and intermediate girls and the small children, bringing their gifts to the cross. The Rev. Forrest Hill, pastor, will speak on "The Triumph of the Resurrection." Special Eas ter music will be presented. The services will be climaxed by a Hallelujah March in which an of fering for missions will be given. Barbara Marsh, member of thu Roseburg Symphony Orchestra, will play her trumpet during the Hallelujah March. LAWSON'S U.S. Freedom Prompts Move To Change- Name VENTURA, Calif. Wl Abraham Poczajum, 36, Polish refugee who spent five years in a German con centration camp, believes the free dom he has found in this country to be so precious that he has asked the court to change his last name to Freeman. The petition, filed Thursday, states that "Freeman reflects the condition of freedom which the petitioner has enjoyed since mi grating to the United States."
