State-Owned Pubs Get 'No' Vote In Commons
LONDON 11 No, Sir. There
won't be any state-owned pubs in
Britain. Not while Winston Church
hill's Conservatives are in office.
His Conservatives in Commons
Wednesday night repealed a bill
passed by the previous Labor gov
ernment to set up state pubs in
new towns planned to ease city
congestion. The vote w as 306 to 266.
Laborite G. S. Lindgren charged
the Conservatives were fronting for
brewers who own most of the pubs.
The brewery-owned pubs serve on
ly their brand, which, he laid, pre
vents citizens in the new-towns
) "from drinking their own choice
of beer.
In the House members and their
guests can get just about anything
alcoholic they want. The House
runs its own bar a sort of form of
public ownership.

On Trip Into Southern Mexico

The Floating Garden. Pyramid
of the Sun, Palace of Fine Arts,
the Cathedral and a bullfight were
a few of the highlights experienced
by the Darrell Merkleys on their
five-week vacation trip into South
ern Mexico. The Merkleys left Rid
dle Jan. 12. stopped at Willits,
Calif., Phoenix, and Mesa, Ariz.,
to visit relatives. Thev entered
Mexico by way of El Paso, Tex.,
and traveled south to Mexico City
where they spent a week, sight
seeing. They then drove to Taxco,
a silver mining center, where
much of the silver is made into
jewelry and silver pieces of all
kind.
On their return north, they stop
ped at Tampico on the Gulf of
Mexico to fish for vellowtails. a
sporting fish weighing 35 to 50
pounas. iney entered the states
through Laredo and stopped at
Carlsbad Caverns, N. Mex.
The Merkleys had but one minor
accident. Their automobile hit a
deer on the highway near Susan'
ville. Calif., dentinir the richt inrt.

Eugene; a nephew, Dellis Cornutt
and Mrs. Cornutt of Roseburg.

Bellflowe' Calif., Raymond Speer,

quet, Calif., Sunday to look after
property interests.
Jack Shurtz is confined to bis
home with burns suffered Sunday
while working on the sprinkling
system at Harbor Plywood Mill.
Mr. Shurtz stepped into a pool of
hot water, formed by a steam
pipe, scalding both legs from the
knees down.

McDonald Confirmed

boss of the scandal-marked Re
construction Finance Corporation
with a warning to influence ped

Senator Douglas (D.-Ill.), calling
McDonald honest but "too weak'1
to stand up to influence pressures,
waged a futile two-hour fight in
the Senate Monday to block the ap
pointment. The roll call vote in
McDonald's favor was 46 to 23.
The way was cleared for final

when a House subcommittee look
ing into charges of fraud in Secur
ity and Exchange Commission ac
tivities announced It has "no credi
ble evidence" of wrongdoing by
McDonald.

Sex Deviates Problem
Tackled In Portland
PORTLAND W) Educators, law
enforcement officials and others
will meet Thursday to outline a
plan for protecting children from
sex deviates.
A preliminary conference was
held Monday in the office of Mayor
Dorothy McCullough Lee. Indeter
minate prison sentences, employ
ment of a psychiatrist for the
Portland municipal court and es
tablishment of out-patient clinics
were some of the possible solutions
discussed.
But Melvio Murpby, executive
secretary of the Oregon Mental
Health Association, said legislation
would be almost worthless unless
treatment facilities with trained
personnel were provided for sex
offenders.
