Oregon Traffic Deaths In 1951 Under Fbrecast .Early estimates of Oregon's 1951 traffic death toll proved in error when a later count turned up 428 fatalities rather than the 440 antici pated by a preliminary check Jan uary 1. The year trend had led to expectations of from 35 to 40 fatalities in the final month. The unexpected fatality decline in December, which Ihe state'! motorists and pedestrians achiev. ed in the face of the year-end holi day hazards and winter weather conditions, orougnt tne luai aeam count exactly even with the final total of 428 recorded in 1950. Hopes for a reduction were abandoned late in the year when monthly in creases in fatal accident failed to taper off. While the state held the line in number of traffic deaths, vehicle travel increased an estimated 350 million miles over total travel of the year befoiv, according to gaso line sales figures reported to Sec retary of State Newbry. The gain in travel resulted In a slightly lowered mileage death rate, Newbry pointed out. Fatal ities in each 100 million miles of total slreet and highway travel reached 6.7 as compared with an even 7.0 in 1950. Numerically, the worst death toll of the post-war years was re corded in 1946 when 482 fatalities occurred. Traffic mishaps in 1947 took 442 lives and 419 were killed in 1948. A post-war low of 356 deaths was recorded in 1949. but Ihe trend was reversed by 1950' s death count of 428. , Misjudgmtnt Costly An upsurge of accidents in which a car stops at a stop sign and then pulls -out Into the intersection in front of an ocoming vehicle has been noted In recent weeks " the Secretary of State's office in Salem has reported. The department's traffic safety division blames it all on drivers who misjudge the distance a car can roll at even relatively low speeds. Said the division: "Many driv ers fail to realize that cars travel ing 30 miles an hour will cover 44 feet in one second. When a driver ' stopped at a stop sign spots a car doing 30 about 150 feet away, that car can cover 176 feet by the time . the stopped car gets into the inter section. The result of misjudgmentn in such cases is obvious." On side roads entering a fast inter-city highway the situation be." comes doubly dangerous, the di vision continued. A car approach-' ing at 50 miles an hour will travel almost 300 feet in four seconds. Most of Oregon's collision-type accidents occur at Intersections, the division pointed out, adding . that the best way to avoid trouble at these locations is to remain stopped until absolutely certain the way is clear. 320 ACRES SB Acrea now cultivated, S3 more could be.
