Trankie Baker, Of Much Publicized ' Duo Of "Frankie And Johnny' Dies In Oregon State Hospital At 75 PENDL1STON (AP) - Frankie Baker, who said it was her man who had done her wrong, is dead. No one knows whether 3he really was the Frankie in "Frankie and Johnny" the two who were lovers until Nellie Bly came along. She Mid she was the central figure in that song twenty years ago. , She sued Mae West and she sued Republic Pic tures trying to collect for a film about Frankie and Johnny. She didn't collect. It was in the hospital at the age of 75, she died Tuesday. Frankie's story has been told and re-told in newspapers and maga zine articles. They haven't always agreed in detail, but this much is definite: she generally told the same. Guns Man to Death She lived in St. i,ouls and there on the night of Oct. 15. 1899 on. Targee street she took Allen Britt's pistol and she killed him with it. That was after she had gone to the home of Alice Pryor and had found Britt there. Whether it was roota-toot-toot-a three-shot job as the song says, isn't clear. But Frankie always said the shooting was the start of the song. Why was "Frankie and Johnny?" . Well, sometimes it was called "Frankie and Albert," too, and Allen Britt was usually called Al bert, she said. Nelly Bly, she said, was just poetic license for the other woman's name. Ran Shoe-Shin Stand Frankie, ' whose teeth flashed white in her dark face, reached Portland In 1915 and that was her home from then on until brought here to the hospital She ran a shoe-shine stand in PorUand for many years and had a strong feel ing of independence. Small and slight, she sat in her knew of "Frankie and Johnny They sang it with derision. She always thought there was some. tning nice about being part of a folk song. Sunshine Better Than Fluoride As Teeth Builder By HOWARD W. BLAKESLEI Associated Press Scieiwe Editor NEW YORK un Sunshine ap pears to outdo fluoride as a builder of better teeth in children in a study reported from Oregon State College, Corvallis, Ore. Flourine in the form of Flouride Is about to be added to the drink ing water of 40 million urban Amer icans. This is due to more then 10 yean of reported unfailing benefit to teeth of children up to age six and a half. The Oregon study sums up sev eral years in which the state was divided into six districts. In some Oregon communities there is a small percentage of natural fluor ide in drinking water; in others, none. This latest report, which adds the Willamette Valley region, was madeby Drs. Demetrios M. Hadji the Department of Foods and Nu trition. Decay Rates Vary High rates of tooth decay were found in children west of the Cas cade Mountains, where there is con siderable rain and cloudiness, and altitudes are low. Low rates were found in Central Oregon, where there is much more sunshine and altitudes run from 2,800 to 5,000 feet. In these studies, no effects were seen from the Fluorides, or from candy bars, or drinking carbonated beverages, or from differences in dental care. Attention was given to carbonated beverages because of experiments on rats, whose teeth can be damaged by too much of the acids in carbonated drinks. The Oregon scientists say sun shine may influence teeth by mak ing Vitamin D. They say high ! markos and Clara A. Storvick at titude sunshine may do this better than low altitude, because of a dif ferent quality in high altitude ultra violate rays. They propose to study this high altitude quality. Garibaldi Fire Kills Tot, Second Near Death TILLAMOOK W Fire destroy ed a home at Garibaldi Monday, fatally burned a 2Wi year old boy and inflicted critical burns on his 3 Vt year old brother. The blaze broke out In the home of Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Nash, who picked up their 4-month-old daugh ter, Cindy, and fled to safety. Then they discovered the two boys still were inside. The father soaked his clothing and dashed inside to find both overcome by smoke. He carried them out, but Gary, 2 Vi, died later. The other boy, Calvin, is in critical condition in a hospital. Ttiur., Jan. 10, 1952 The Newt-Review, Roseburf, Ore. 9 Costello Goes To Trial On 11 Contempt Items NEW YORK Frank Costello Gambler unperturbed Tuesday as the prosecution out lined for a federal court jury its contempt of the senate case against him. He kept his arms folded much of the time, and only occasionally blinked his eyes as U.S. Attorney Mylcs J. Lane told Judge Sylves ter J. Ryan apd the jury what the government expected to prove. Lane recited the 11 charges in the indictment accusing Costello of contempt in his appearances before the Kefauver Senate Crime Com mittee in New York last year. The prosecutor said the indict ment included eight counts alleg ing refusal to answer questions, and three charges of default. He said the default counts said that Costello had' left the- com mittee hearing room without per mission, and on one occasion had appeared, but refused, to testify. Lane said the questions Costello refused to answer included the defendant's net worth, his indebted ness, and whether he owed sums in excess of (10,000 to single individuals. Egyptian Guerrillas Attack British Troops CAIRO. Egypt W Two British soldiers one of them an officer, were killed Wednesday in a. fight between iiriiisn troops ana Egyp tian guerillas six miles west of a big Royal Air Force base near the Suet Canal.
