These labs, of which there are about 15 in the U. S. at the pres ent time, are selected jewelers whose gemological training and experience end equipment qualify them for appointment as gem identification laboratories. T 0 qualify, a jeweler must have in the regular employ, a, certified gemologist of the American Gem society and have the required gemological testing instruments. The laba are set up as gem testing service for the jewelry profession and for the general public. Other American Gem society testing labs are in major cities of the U. 8. The lab is under the direction of Alvln M. Knudtson of Knudt- sons jewelers. Registered jew eler of the society since 1934, Mr. Knudtson has been a certified gemologist since 1936. At the time Knudtson became certified gemol ogist, there were fewer t h a n 20 gemologists in the country. Now certified gemologists in the U. S. number over 100 with over 1,000 jewelers holding registered jew elers titles, and many more as members of the society who are not directly connected with the jewelry industry. The American Gem society of the United States and Canada is a non profit professional society made up of jewelers, scientists and educators whose business or profession is related to the study of gemology, pledged to the "vigilant" protection of the jewelry buying public and ad vancement in the study of gem ology. Headquarters of the society are in Los Angeles and New York city, said Al Knudtson, jun ior partner in the business. There are hundreds of species of gems. In every color, there are from five to 25 gema which may easily be confused with each other. Many gems or gem substitutes of different kinds can be placed side by side and all appear sim ilar, Knudtson aaid. The 'Graf Zeppelin left Germany, Oct. 11, 1928, and arrived at Lake hurst, N.
