Not To Old To Run,
Barkley Declares
WASHINGTON UP) Viet
President Barkley today brushed
aside the idea that he may be too
old for a political race in the 1952
national election.
VI have ahead of me lots of
years," Barkley said in an 'nter
view published by the magazine
U. S. News and World Report,"
whether they be years of service
may depend on the American peo
ple. ...A man who is 70
Js supposed to be about what the
man 50 years old was 50 years
ago." I
The vice president is 73. Some
political observers have speculated
his age might rule him out of
consideration In any Democratic
search for a possible successor
to President Truman should Mr.
Truman decide not to run.
He thinks a Democratic ticket
headed by President Truman could
win in 1952. But he has "no infor
mation whatever" as to Mr. Tru
man's Intentions. He added, how
ever, that should the President de
cide to run "as a matter of public
duty. . . .he can and undoubtedly
will b nominated, and, in my opin
ion, will be elected."
The slave trade began in 1503,
when the Portuguese landed the
first shipment of Negroes at Santo
Domingo.

Because many people only thought their
campf ires were dead, thousands of acres
of forest lands have been ravaged by
destructive fires.
Don't take it for granted, be sure your
fi, e is out.
Stamp on it, reducing every ember to
powder. Then rake it over thoroughly.
Then douse it with water until not the
slightest spark remains. Your help is
needed to KEEP OREGON GREEN and
to maintain our forest lands at their
productive peak.
