I VISITOR: Norman Ostby, vice ; president in charge of. station re I lations for. Don Lee, was a visitor to KRNR this week to look over the station and talk with Manager LeRoy Hiatt. Ostby joined the Don Lee c onization in September 1949 as sales and service manager. Most of his work was in sales and service coordination of the network with affiliations. Ostby began his radio career as a salesman with Wentworth radjo in Toronto. After a year and a half in Canada, be turned to New York as a radio reatiler, and in 1938 joined NBC as a network account executive. He was instrumental in organizing and operating the sales, serv ice and traffice departments for Blue when that network was separ ated from NBC. Just the other day, Willit Brown, president of the Don Lee broadcasting system, ap pointed Ostby to his new high post The station relations program has a vital and far-reaching eifect on the listeners. The station rela lions head works very closely with all departments in the network to provide the best in service to af filiate stations, by taking care of contractual arrangements, provid ing promotional material, and in fact being all things to both the network and affiliate stations. Coca-Cola Wins Ruling Against Belgian Brewers BRUSSELS. Belgium (.Pi A Brussels court has rejected a damage claim of the Beleian Pro fessional Union of Brewers against I ). . The union had claimed token damages judgment of one franc, claiming that Coca-Cola, by con taining caffein and phosphoric acid, was "prejudging the interests of members of the brewers' union." The judgment cleared the cor poration of the charge. The brewers said that the bev erage was breaking Belgian law which prohibited the inclusion "of toxic and medicinal ingredients. The Belgian hygiene council had the beverage analyzed and said there was nothing in it which would make it unfit for public use. The public prosecutor dismissed the union's complaint. The union then brought the pres ent damage claim. Meanwhile, in the light of the hygiene council's findings, the Bel gian government decided to amend the legislation. A new law stating the maximum amount of caffein and phosphoric acid which could be safely included in foodstuffs was passed in May. 1951. Coca-Cola was found well within these limits. Phone 1345 Prize Awarded Methodist Church Of Camas Valley The Camas Valley Methodist church has been awarded third prize in the open country church classification of the Sears-Roebuck Town and Country Church Improvement contest. The award of $50 and a certif icate of merit were presented to Marlen Yoder, superintendent o f the Camas Valley schools and representative of the Camas Valley church. Presentation of awards was made July 10, at the Me morial Union on the Oregon State college campus in Corvallis, during the fifth annual Leader ship institute for Town and Coun try churches. Many Hours Donated Grading was based on landscan- ing, improvement of church build ings, and community service. The outstanding feature of Camas Val ley's work was the 1000 man hours donated to improving the church and starting the parsonage. The work was accomplished under the leadership of Wesley Durlana, then minister, who has since returned to college for further education. Rev. Mr, Weaver is the new min ister. The leadership institute is under tne sponsorship of Oregon State college in cooperation with the Ore gon Council of Churches, the arch diocese of Portland in Oregon, the Home Missions council of North America, the Oregon Home EcO' nomics Extension council, Oregon Farm bureau, Oregon State Grange, and the Oregon State Farmers' union. The three classifi cations of churches in the contest were churches in communities of 1000 or less, 100 to 2600, and open country cnurcnes. State Dept. Officers of the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers said Judge Arthur J. Mellptt's decision freed them from necessity o( going to Oregon, where a suit i. pend- ing in a state circuit court. An attorney representing mem bers of the local said that the de cision left the local free to go ahead with its suit In circuit court at Portland. Ore. The decision did bar further suits in Oregon, but specified that legal action started before June 12 would not be affected. Mambert of local 401 filed the court suit In May, ettomptinf te force the International to re store local control of the unit, to return tho locals money and to move tho local back from Rose burg. Ore., to Vancouver, Wash. The money was amassed In war time initiation fees and dues of thousands of temporary defense workers. The local now has 1.15 dues - paying members who seek control of the fund. The Interna tional transferred the money from fortiand to Kansas City, and moved the local's headquarters to Kosenurg in a move to retain con trol of the fund. Attorney James Means of Fortiand said. He rep resents members of the local. Judge Mellolt'a decision here left the money in the hands of I re ceiver for the present. The next development is ex pected to come in the Portland circuit court. There the Interna tional has filed a motion to quash the local's proposal to return money and control to local mem bers. Means said he has filed an ans wer to the International motion. Jude James W. Emmett, spent Sunday at the home of Don Young in Garden Valley. Law Excusing Pupils For Religion Upheld ALBANY. N. Y. UP) New York's highest court has upheld the constitutionality of a state law permitting public schools to excuse pupils one hour a week to attend outside religious classes. Jud Charles W. Frossel of the state court of appeals wrote that the constitution "does not demand that every friendly gesture be tween church and state shall be discountenanced." The state law was challenged by two New York Citv parents, a Prot estant and a Jew, who contended that the so-called "released time" program constituted aid to reli gion and violated the constitutional requirement of separation of church and state. Under the New York plan, chil dren are released from public school one hour a week, at their parents' request, to attend reli gious instruction classes else where. Right To Choose Military Branch Will End Sunday Midnight Sunday is the deadline for men who have had their pre in- du'etion physicals to volunteer for the branch of the armed forces of their choice. The army and air force recruiting station in the Pa cific building. Roseburg. will ue open until that time but offices of other service branches will close at noon Saturday. Selective service regulations pre viously had prohibited voluntary enlistment of men who had re ceived their draft notices or pre reduction physicals, but these reg ulations were waived from June 15 to July 15 to allow enlistments. This month's draft call was com prised of only two men. Local selective service headquar ters reports that 20 men on local files have taken their pre-induction physicals and are eligible to volun teer for the service of their choice. only one person has taken advan tage of the opportunity, it was re ported. Regular draft procedure beitna again Monday when new methods will be inagurated by which men will be drafted into the various branches of the armed forces. Lo cal headquarters did not release details of this procedure but it was reported that a "fairly large quota" is expected for next month. Marijuana Possession Jails Three Negroes VANCOUVER, Wash. (JP Two soldiers were held here and another waa arrested in Portland, all accused of possession of mari juana. The two held here were enroute from a camp in the southwest to Fort Lawton of Seattle. Lt E. W. Crites, provost marshal at Van couver barracks, said. In addition to the marijuana, they also had marijuana seeds, appar ently for i future crop, he said. The two held here were iden tified as Pfc. J. Doyle Wiley Jr., and SgL Albert L. Taylor, both 21. Arrested in Portland was Pfc. Eugene P. Townsend. 23. He was stationed at the Portland air base.
