Prospective Candidates Coy On Running For President Bv JACK BELL WASHINGTON1 (AP) Look at the record and you'd think nobody well, almost nobody wanta to be presi dent for the four years beginning in January, 1953. Although the Democratic and Republican nominating conventions are only a little more than a year away, coy ness among prospective candidates has reached something of record breaking proportions. One man. President Truman, says he knows what he's goinn to do. But he hasn't said what that is. Outside of Mrs. Truman and maybe Margaret nobody seems to know whether the President is going to run again or not. If you ask William M. Boyle Jr., the democratic national chairman, he puts on his most inscrutable smile. Boyle has been practicing it for years and it never worked better. Boyle doesn't have to worry. His plan of campaign is the same whether Mr. Truman chooses or does not choose to run. He is simply going out to gather up for Mr. Truman all of the convention delegates he can corral. If the Presidents runs, fine and dandy. If he does not, Mr. Tru man asks the delegates to support the man of his choice. Simple as that. Kven Jonathan Daniels, Raleigh, N. C.t editor and Truman biogra pher, said after a White House a. REASONABLE RENT: Business Location with 10-Fr. Frontage on 200 Block of North Jackson. I This kind of report makes It difficult for other democrats t do much about running for president. They can't even run for vice presi dent as long aa A I ben Berkley gives no indication of stepping out. Like School Girls Small wonder, then, that such democrats as senators Kefauver of Tennessee, Douglas of Illinois, Lyndon Johnson of Texas, Rep. franklin D. Roosevelt Jr., Justice William O. Douglas, Chief Justice Fred Vinson, Gov. G. 'taennen Williama of Michigan, and others are as coy as school girls. Look magasine says in its cur rent issue it polled 41 Democratic senators andfound only five who named Mr. Truman aa their first choice to make next year's race. 11 said IS favored Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower. The Republicans have no such barrier as the Democrats but the nearest they have to an avowed candidate is Senator Robert A. Taft of Ohio. Taft says he expects to decide sometime before Sept. 1 whether to run. President Harold E. Stassen of the University of Pennsylvania, who has tried before, ssya he will wait until next January to decide what to do. Gov. Thomas E. Dewey of New York, the two time presidential nominee of the party, says he's out of it and is plugging Eisen hower. Gov. Earl Warren of California obviously is going to make an ac tive bid for the nomination but he isn't saying so publicly. Gen. Douglas MacArthur says' "emphatically no" he's not a can didate. Gov. Alfred E. Driscoll of New Jersey might like to be, but isn't admitting it publicly. Senator Henry Cabot Lodge Jr., of Massachusetts Is mighty busv lining things up to run again for tne senate. Senator Everett M. Dirksen of Illinois might be en ticed into the race, but not right now, thanks. Senator James 11. Duff of Pennsylvania says he wants to make a president, not be one. Senator Kenneth S. Wherry of Nebraska is keeping his cards close to his vest. Senator Mar garet Chase Smith of Maine Prob ably could be convinced she ought to run for vice president but is awaiting events. Senator Joseph McCarthy (R Wis) gives signs of national am bitions, but displays an unusual reticence about them. The most talked about man In both parties is Eisenhower. The citations now go to the Jus tice department, for possible pro secution. Contempt of- Congress is punishable by up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine. Fih?ttl and Humphreys had re fused to answer questions at com mittee inquiries at which O'Conor and his staff sought to explore the sources of their income and pos sible underworld connections.
