J. f. liope is held out for ultimate dis covery of ways to prevent and cure nuch diseases as rheumatoid arthritis and rheumatic fever. It stemmed from announcement of a new concept of the cause o( the diseases announced by four Washington researchers: D r. Thomas McPherson Brown and three associates of George Wash ington university school of medi cine and Mt. Alto Veterans Ad ministration hospital. They reported evidence which they said suggested the possibility that the whole class of "rheumatic diseases" probably the major cause of chronic illness in America today may be due to an un usual type of microbe, called an "I organism." This concept, they declared, may alter sharply the current concept that such diseases are primarily due to a deficiency of some sub stance produced in the body tis ane. And they said the theory offers sn explanation of why the drugs ACTH and cortisone, which have shown promise In the control o f certain rheumatic ills, produce temporary effect and therefore must be administered regularly. If further research establishes th.it a specific germ is involved in rheumatic disease, they said, the way would then be open to possi ble direct attack with drugs for the prevention of a full-blown attack or the overcoming of established symptoms. Already, they reported, certain of the "antibiotic" drugs terra mucin, atireomvcin and Chloromy cetin have shown promising ef fects. But they added that on the basis of (he new concept, more effective weapons might possibly be found. Dr. Konrad Dobriner of the Sloan-Kettering institute for can cer research. New York City, re ported evidence that abnormal function of the adrenal glands is 'an integral part" of rheumatoid arthritis. He offered no statement in his report as to whether he thought a microbe also was in volved. cost after the boy's plight and the devotion of his father attracted wide publicity. Arthur Marton. 34-year-old far mer of Archerwill, Saskatchewan, had carried the boy in his arms during a 3.000-mile bus trip. Doc tors had told him the boy was doomed to die with a rare de terioration of brain tissue. Marton had sought tha aid of divine beat ing through an evangelist here. Tuesday night, the doctors told the father that the boy would get well. His weight has jumped three pounds.
