Clarence Howard Vetterli. an as sistant professor of journalism at El Camino Junior College near here, was arrested Wednesday. Witczak was identified ai a So viet spy by Igor Gouzenko, former code clerk at the Soviet embassy in Ottawa, Ont., during the Canad ian espionage trial of 1946. Federal authorities said the trips to Japan were believed to be in con nection with a Russian espionage ring there in 1941. "I knew Witciak merely as a friend," Vetterli said. "We m t while wa were both students at tha University of Southern California. I never gave anyone any money to go to Japan and I stand by my prev ious testimony." Federal agents said Vetterli's testimony threw them off the trail and hampered investigation of Wit czak. who disappeared in 1945. Vetterli, who is married and has two children, has taught at El Cam ino since 194S. He previously taught at high schools. I- . OPS Director Named For Oregon District , PORTLAND OP, Willis A. West. Portland attorney, has been named enforcement director for the Oregon district price stabiliza tion office. C. C. Spears was appointed chief of the investigation section and Wayne E. Kain, assistant chief. West, an army lieutenant colo nel in World War II, was a staff judge advocate and served as chief of the war crimes commission in the China theater. Spears, a former FBI agent, has his own investigation agency here. Doug, las MacArthur has cracked the best seller lists with the by-prod ucts of hia "old soldiers apeecn to Congress April 1. All toM, recordings of the dra matic address are expected to reach a total sale of 2,000,000, Equally "phenomenal" sales are reported for the hastily produced records of the "Old Soldiers Never Die" ballad, which the general re vived into an over-night hit hi his speech. The address is out in book form, too. Rand McNaily printed 2.10, 000 copies at SO cents each. The publishers report, "all the distrib utors have gobbled them up; they're selling very fast." With unprecedented speed, four recording compsnies brought tha speech out on wax within tour or five days after it waa delivered. Columbia records estimates its sales at between 10,000 and 15.000 a day. RCA Victor says II total up to now is 150.000. Capitol Rec ords say it is selling "several thou sand" a day. Mercury records have sold about 40,000 to date. The latter firm reported: "We have never before had any thing which sold that well that quickly." No royalties are involved since the address belongs to the "pub lic domain." High School Girl Dies In Automobile Mishap MEDFORD UP) Mavis John, son, 16, was killed outright Thurs day when the car she was driving left the road, overturned and rolled 124 feet near Ruch, 12 miles south of here. State police said cause of the accident was undetermined. They theorized that the girl, alone in the car, was hurrying to her Apple gate valley home from a visit to a store in order to catch but for Jacksonville high school, where ahe was a student.
