ORDER OF EASTERN STAR ENTERTAINS FOR MASONS AT PINNER MEETING Masons were entertained by the members Of Oakland chapter No. 1, Order of Eastern Star, at their regular meeting April 26. At the business meeting held before the program, Mrs. Nadine Stearns, Mrs. Fern Flory and Mrs. Ella Sparks were appointed to purchase drapes for the temple. It was re ported that Mrs. Ruth Davis had a new baby girl and that they were getting along nicely. Mrs, Fern Flnry was appointed chair man of the blood bank committee, . The temple wat decorated with arrangements of 'lilacs, tamarix and tulips by Mrs. Mary Barker and Mrs. Ada McCall. The temple was recently redecorated, the walls, ceiling and woodwork being light green with a new grey rug on the floor. The following program was pre sented: address of welcome by Mrs. Virgins Stacey, worthy matron; response by George Wilcox, wor- sniptul master ot Oakland lodge No. 16; playlet by members of the chapter; and a skit "Lesson on Culture" by members of the Rose burg Past Noble Grand's Club. Mrs. Helen King of Roslyn chap ter and Mrs. ?rankie Harms of North Star chapter were visitors. Alfred Tyson was guest speaker at a most Interesting meeting of the Roseburg Woman's club Tuesday afternoon in the so cial hall of the Methodist church. Rev. Mr. Tyson, in observance ot national music week, gave an in tensely interesting talk on all types of muse. He played a number of piano selections' to illustrate nis talk, me program was most en lovable. Kev. Mr. Tyson was in- traduced by Mrs. Earl Plummer, I music chairman. Mrs. J. M. Boyles, president, I conducted the meeting. Mrs. A. J. Geddes gave the invocation and re ports were given by Miss Jennie t. jorey and Mrs. w. n. carter. The convention for District No. 1 was announced for Sent. 14 to he held in Bandon. Plans were outlined for the Rose show to be sponsored by the club June 6. Mrs. Earl Bleile and Mrs. H. F. Beauchamp are co-chairmen with Mrs. Kenneth Ford as Gar den department chairman. SHOEMAKER JR. Alpha Theta chapter. Beta Sigma Phi, held its annual initiation of pledges and installation of offi cers. April 30 following the Found er's Day banquet. Mrs. Ray Sims, president, initiated the following women into the chapter; Mrs. By ron Woodruff, Mrs. Robert Harris, Mrs. Stuart Smith, Mrs. W. D. Wright, Mrs. D. L. Barrows, Mrs. R. K. Murray and Mrs. Shoe maker. The ceremony was held at the B. R. Shoemaker Jr. home in Winchester. Mrs. Sims also installed Mrs. Jack Cummins, who will assume the duties of president for the coming year: Mrs. Byron Smith, recording secretary: Mrs. Bar rows, treasurer; Mrs. Walter Fisher, director, and Mrs. H. C. Church, sponsor. It was announced that all mem ber of Beta Sigma Phi and their guests are cordially invited to at tend the May dance at the Rose burg country club Friday evening. The Thermopylae temple of Grants Pass extended the invita tion for the 1952 convention to be held there. Following the afternoon session, a banquet was held in the Umpqua hotel. Entertainment was furnished by a sextet composed of Joan Hannon. Glenna Gill, Betty Hetlge, Ruby Willey, Ruth Davis and Pat Dunwoodie: a piano solo was played by Betty Hedge and a solo was given by Wayne Wagner ac companied by Roland Wagner. Evening session was opened with the competitive drills and judging of scrapbooks. Roseburg temple No. 21 was awarded first prize in the comical skit division ami Klamath Falls temple was awarded first prize in the romance drill division. The scrapbooks were judged as follows; Klamath Falls, first prize; Roseburg, second prize; Medford, third prize, with Grants Pass and Bandon receiving hon orable mention. I the Oregon State highway depart i ment, Mr. Kirkwood has been re i connsissnce and locating engineer for some of Oregon's major high I ways. Notable among locations was extended work on the John Day and Columbia River routes. He also located the Pacific high way from Grants Pass to Csnyon- ville. Shoemakers' on the North Ump qua river made a beautiful setting for the recent meeting of the Rose burg Art and Embroidery club Mrs. Alice Rhoads was hostess for the occasion. She was assisted by her two daughters, Mrs. S. J. Shoe maker and Mrs. Henry Snyder. A Pollyanna game was played and the birthdays of Mrs. C. J. Bradley and Mrs. jess Bowman were ob served. FULLERTON STUDENTS PRESENT ART EXHIBIT FOLLOWED BY TEA HOUR Third grade students of Fuller- .ton school entertained their par ents Wednesday afternoon with an art exhibition and social hour. Parents were welcomed at the door by a student committee and shown the year's art work, which was on exhibition. The rooms were charmingly decorated with ar rangements of spring flowers as well as window boxes of artificial flowers made by the classes. Following a tour of the art work and the introduction of parents, refreshments were served from prettily appointed tables bv stu dent hostesses. Miss Parrott Is one of Rose burg's most loved citizens. Her teaching ca reer extended from tho rural schools in Douglas county, princi palship of city schools and head of the English department in high schools, normal and Teachers' col leges. She has held teaching posi tions in the west, middleweat, east and south. Her teaching career ended only when a nervous break down forced her to return to Ore gon. Her chief interest, since her return, has been the very beautiful garden surrounding her ancestral home. Miss Parrott has held a large number of important positions. With representatives from the Uni versity of Oregon and Oregon State college, she assisted with the or ganizing of the English Council ot Teachers, of which she was sec retary. The rooms were attactively dec orated in lilacs snd rhodenderons, A prettily decorated cake, topped by a miniature stork encircled by spring flowers, snd a bouquet of many colored tulips graced the serving table. Several interesting coolest games were introduced by Mrs. Harry Bratsch with the prize swarded to Mrs. Evon Wheeland, Mrs. Betty Swaim, Miss Stella Fin nell and Mrs. Myrtle Swanson.
