Winchester Bay Angler Missing; Feared Drowned REEDS PORT (VP) A Win chester Bay fisherman was miss ing and feared drowned Thursday after he apparently failed to reach shore after swimming away from a fishing boat disabled in the Ump qua river. He was Earl F. Gossett, about 28, who was fishing Wednesday with Alton Elwood of Reedsport. Elwood said they moored the boat on a sand island in the river about three miles below Gardiner. They left the boat, but a short time later found it had floated away. Current Claims Swimmer Elwood said Gossett swam out to the boat, was unable to start the motor and started to swim back. Gossett called to Elwood to get a fire going as he approached the island, but the current carried him past it. Gossett was wearing a cork life preserver, Elwood said, and appeared to be floating close to the north shore of the river near Barrett's landing when El wood last saw him. He thought Gossett had reached shore. Elwood reached the south shore of the river on a makeshift rslt and hiked into Winchester bay, ar riving about 10 p.m. Wednesday. It was then he learned that Gossett had not returned home. A plane searched the area Thurs day and the coast guard sent a search crew out. Gossett, a disabled World War II veteran, was subject to seizures. His mother, Mrs. C. Gossett, and a sister live at Winchester Bay. Douglas MacArthur says the ousted Far Eastern commander gave "his wholehearted support" to President Truman and "made desperate efforU to carry out his policies and directions" up until the tiay he was dismissed. The aide, Maj. Gen Courtney Whitney, held a surprise news con ference Thursday several hours after MacArthur and his party re turned from the closed senate hearing in Washington. Whitney's conference dealt largely with a story in Newsweek magazine. The general's personal aide de nied Newsweek 'a assertion that his chief had been planning a "war" on President Truman before the latter issued his ouster order. "General MacArthur's sole ef fort was support of the President and the PresiUent'a decisions," Whitney said. Newsweek says that. 90 days be fore his ouster, MacArthur "al ready had started compiling and indexing all the pertinent docu ments" defending his ideas as op posed to those of the administration. "For the Job," the magazine savs. "he (MacArthur) asked friend, an okj army sergeant who had served under him for 30 years and was living in retirement in Tennessee, to return to active duty, The sergeant had picked eight en listed men as his assistants and they had gone to work." Whitney described the assertion as "completely false." Newsweek adds that, as a result of nine soldiers efforts, MacAr thur had 21 foot-lockers "crammed with documents" aboard his plane when he left Jokyo. SHI LAYS 'EM BIG REFDSPORT. Ore.
