DONNA BOWMAN BECOMES BRIDE OF RICHARD POE AT IMPRESSIVE CEREMONY Miss Donna Bowman, daughter ,r- ,nd Mrs- George Bowman of Elltton and Robert Richard Poe, son of Sirs. Jean Anderson of Port and were united in marriage by the Rev. Gilbert H. Newland, Sun day at 2:30 p.m. at the Methodist church. The double ring ceremony was performed. The bride was given in mar riage by her father. Her gown was white nylon orgar.dy with a train and Ihree quarter-lengih veil with orange blossom halo. She carried a white Bible topped wilh an or chid and ribbon rosebud stream ers. Matron of honor wai Mrs. Rod erick (Lois) Bowman in yellow taffeta. The bridesmaids were Miss Iva Hedges of Portland, sis. ter of the bridegroom, who wore blue net over taffe'a and Miss Dons Smith of Elkton, who wore yellow taffeta. Junior bridesmaid was Diane Haines in yellow dotted swiss and flower girl was Gloria Haines, also in yellow dotted swiss. They are both cousins of the bride. Best man was Pvt. Roderick Bowman, brother of the bride. Ardena Hague, a cousin of the bride, and Diane Haines lighted the candles. Ushers were: Joe Pedro and Carlton Smith, both of Reedsport and Rodney Hague of Sutherlin, a cousin of Ihe bride. Mrs. Elton Benedick plaved the wedding march and Mr. Benedict sang "I Love You Truly" and "Be cause." Mrs. Bertie Lewis of Reedsport served the cake and Mrs. Gladyee Stewart poured. Mrs. Lawrence Smith assisted in the reception room. Joanne Smith of Reedsport had charge of the guest book. Mrs. Helen Dickerson and Mrs. Carlton Smith of Reedsport were i charge of the gifts. I For goin? away the bride wore i an aqua suit wilh brown acces sories and an orchid corsage. After a short honeymoon the couple is at home in Reedsport where the bridegroom is employed. This is the third generation to be marred in the Elkton Methodist church. Mr. and Mrs. Alex Saw yers, the bride's grandparents in 1307 and Mr. and Mrs. George Bowman, her parents were married there in 1927. FRIENDS SURPRISE MR. AND MRS. HEINBACH ON WEDDING ANNIVERSARY Mr. and Mrs. William C. Hein bach were pleasantly surprised Saturday evening, when a group of friends arrived at their home in Dillard to celebrate their wedtling anniversary . Pinochle was in play during the evening. Mr. Joe Tealer won the first prize for men and Mrs. Wil lard Laurance for the ladies. Guests enjoying the affair were: Mr. and Mrs. Fred Alburtus, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Brown, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Tealer, Mr. ami Mrs. Willard Laurance. No date has been set for tht vedding. 0 G MEN'S NIGHT OBSERVED AT EASTERN STAR MEETING MARCH IS Roseburg chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, celebrated men's night March IS by having a pot luck dinner at 6:30, planned and served by Ihe men. George Church ill acted as chairman of Ihe din ner, assisted by Ralph Cooper, Theo Bond, G. M. Krell, L. L. Pow ers and A. L. DeMott. The men wore white aprons and cook's caps bedecked with shamrocks. Green shamrocks were also used to decorate the tables. Immediately after the dinner, the meeting was held, presided over by Mrs. Earl Wiley, worthy ma Iron. At the close of the meeting a very entertaining program was pre sented by the men of the order. Ray B. Hampton, worthy patron, was in charge. The program in cluded solos by Ralph Church. Cap 'os Page gave a poem about Lin coln written by the late Dr. Louis Albert Banks, also one written by h i s daughter. Margaret Page Schultze, entitled "A Rendezvous with Life." The "Three Old Men" portrayed by H. H. Turner, Lesler Spencer and J. P, Motsrhenbacher amused the audience. The program was concluded by the comedian of the evening, "Lil Ray" Hampton, who sang several songs and accom panied himself on his cello-sized ukelele, and spun yarns about mem bers present in Ihe audience. PRETTY SHOWER GIVEN BY MRS. RHODEN AND MRS. HOFFMAN RECENTLY Pink and blue parasols hung from the chandelier and a large stork to greet guests at the door set the theme for the pink and blue shower given for Mrs. Clyde Moore last week. Mrs. Lowell Rho dun was hostess for the charming event, assisted by Mrs. Alvin Hoff man. A decorated play pen held gifts for the honor guest. Games were enjoyed and after the presents were opened, refreshments were served. Those present were Mrs. Alvin Hoffman. High scores in the contract bridge play went to Mrs. Hughes, j Mrs. Ajiderson and Mrs. Sedell. j , "i" lAJorli ij Cjran d Official Uhit Roseburg chapter, No. 8, Order of the Eastern Star, and Oakland chapter No, 91, held their annual district meeting March 17 at the Masonic hall in Roseburg. The oc casion was the visit of Pearl Ma clay, worthy grand matron of the grand chapter of Oregon. Mrs. Ma clay is from LaGrande. The meeting was preceded by a dinner for officers and members. The Easter motif was cleverly car ried out in the table decorations with rabbits and baskets, of col ored eggs. Earl Wiley, V. J. Mi Telli, Ralph Cooper, Frank Brown and W. G. Clarenbach assisted in the serving. In the chapter room, a beautiful, luminous Easter cross, enveloped in a blue cloud with white dog wood blossoms climbing upward, was the single dominating point of interest. This beautiful arrange ment was made by Betty Smith. The worthy matron, Mrs. Earl Wi ley, told the impressive story of the part played by the dogwood tree in the crucifixion of Christ. Honored guests present besides the worthy grand matron, Pearl Maclay, were lima Thum, past grand matron from Cottage Grove and Leila Wimbcrly, grand con ductress, Roseburg. They were presented and escorted to the East. Ada Brown, worthy matron from Oregon chapter No. 57 and Mary La Prath, from Glendale, were also presented and escorted. ROSEBURG GIRL AWARDED FIRST POSITION FOR SIX MONTHS SCHOLARSHIP Mrs. Clark Leedy (Meredith Anne Jenkins), only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Jenkins of Roseburg, and who is a senior at Parsons School of Design in New York City, has been awarded first position in the school's an nual choice of students for a schol arship providing six months in tensive study in European art centers. Three were chosen. Mrs. Leedy is specializing in interior design. Mrs. Leedy will leave New York, June 6. and will study six weeks in Paris and Ihe remainder of the time will be spent in various cities in Italy, including Florence, Venice and Home. Instruction will be conducted by the staff of Par son's School of Design in Paris, a branch of the New York City institution. Mrs. Leedy attended Roseburg public schools and University of Washington, prior to going to New York City to study. MRS. DON REED IS HOSTESS TO JUNIOR DIVISION CIRCLE FOR RECENT MEETING Mrs. Don Reed was hostess to the Junior Division of the First Christian church at her home on West First street March 13. Lila Naas, president, conducted the business meeting. Alice Barker and Mrs. Raymond Clark were in charge of the service. The hostess, assisted by Lela Tyler and Mlidred Hodson, served re freshments decorated in the St. Patrick's day theme. Members present were Marie Bagwell, Phyllis Givens, Florence Naas, Elsie Coffell. The Roseburg Choral club sang three numbers under the direction of R, Cloyd Riffe and accompa nied by Mrs. Gordon Stewart. They were "Four l.eaf Clover," "The Star" and an Easter hymn, "Beautiful Savior." The courtesy girls gave an addendum, during which they presented flowers and a gift to Mrs. Maclay from both the chapters. Mrs. Maclay graciously re sponed to the honor accorded her, concluding her talk with the poem "The House by the Side of the Road" and telling of the ges ture of friendship that prompted the author to compose the noon Short talks were also given by Mrs. Thum, Mrs. Wimberly, the three visiting matrons and Delmar Murphy, worthy patron from Oak land. After the meeting, refreshments were served in the dining room by Mrs. R. D. Williams and Mrs. A. E. Kent, chairmen, assisted by Mrs. W. G. Clarenbach, Mrs. Lu ther Ellison, Mrs. T. G. I Miss Page reported on the me- morial service, held at Ihe Multno man hotel, at which time Mayor Dorothy Lee was the speaker. Mayor Lee stated, Personal secu- rity was not assured in colonial times and is not now either." At one of the convention programs, Dr. Dillon, president of Linfield college, was the speaker and said. "The human family has made progress, jjut lately we have retrogressed and that more people of the world are turning to com munism than lo democracy and we must proceed under the broth erhood of Gud and man and must live and teach democracy." A speaker from the American Legion complimented the DAR members j upon their alertness lo commu nism and slated lhat there were ; 275 registered communisls. Mrs. Rossman proved a most excellent speaker. She presented the review realistically and in a very interesting manner. A decision was made to have each member earn one dollar to ward a 4-H scholarship. Ways of earning the dollar will be disclosed April 21 at a basket social.
