Ac Olsen Appointed Red Cross Head For Canyonville Mr. Ralph Herman, executve secretary of the Douglas County American Red Cross has appointed Mrs. R. E. Olsen, Canyonville, chairman of the Canyonville chap ter, American Red Cross. Mrs. Olsen will take active cliarRe of Red Cross activities i n connection with Canyonville's civil defense pronram. She will be as sisted by Mr. Ted Nimmo and Mrs. Clinton Atherton. One of Mrs. Olsen's first and most vital objectives is the organ isation of a home nursing and nurse's aid school under the tutor ing of Mrs. Bertha Green and Mrs. Ksther Falk, who are registered nurses and graduates of the Red Cross training school in Roseburg, Classes will begin Tuesday from 2 to 4 p. m. under the supervision of Mrs. Green. From 8:00 to 10:00 p. m. similar classes are sched uled under the supervision of Mrs. Falk. All classes will be held in the city council chamber where two hospital beds have been in stalled. Volunteers Needed Volunteers are urged to enroll wilh either Mrs. Green or Mrs. Falk at the earliest opportunity. There is no charge for the school but it will be necessary to pur chase a text book for 65 cents. Equipment is needed such as wash basins, towels, wash cloths, soap, tea kettles (long spout), etc. Anyone willing to donate or loan such articles should contact Mrs. Olsen personally, or telephone :S7. Civil defense supplement to Red Cross nursing is to be incorporated into the above classes. It is ex pected that it will lake seven classes of two hours each to com plete the course. Census Bill For Allotment Boost Signed By McKay SALEM (."PI Cities which annex new territory can get extra state highway and liquor apportion ments from the state based on pop ulation of the added territory. Governor McKay has signed in to law a bill to permit the secre tary of state, when requested by a city, to take census counts in annexed territory. The cities must pay for the cost of such counts. State liquor and highway appor tionments to cities are based on population. Without the law, rity annex ing new territory would have to wait up to 10 years, or until the next federal census, to get its in creased apportionment. Now, by having the secretary of state count the noses, cities won't have to wait. The House has completed legis lative action on a bill to let the I state round up the thousands nf horses running at large on public lands, The slate could sell any un i branded horses it finds. But for branded horses, it would return them to the owners and charge up to $25 a horse for returning them.
