(.TI Polio is becoming rarer ami that may be why epidemics are larger, why more adults get it, why there is more paralysis of victims and why more of them die. This paradoxical possibility wai explained by Dr. Edward G. lie Gavran, dean of the school of pub lic health, University of North Carolina. It is based on the prob ability that formerly almost every one at some time suffered a mild polio attack, anil that a larger and larger number of us escape and mild form today. So many escape that polio may really be rare by comparison. The very name, infantile paralysis, Dr. McGavran said, comes from the fact that originally this disease mostly attacked infants. It was then so commonplace that possibly nearly every infant contracted it, but most of the cases were mild or unrecognized. Polio, he said, has gone Ihe same way as many other infant and child diseases, and is no longer so common. The mild cases apparently con ferred lifelong immunity, and nearly everyone was immunized in early life. Now, not so many of us are immune, and if that is true. Dr. McGavran says, it ex plains the increase among adults. There are also more older children getting polio for the same reason. Why there should be more pa ralysis and more deaths. Dr. Mc Gavran says is not certain, but this too can be explained readily if polio is like most other diseases. Each disease is likely to do more harm to some special age group than to other ages. Dean McGavran says it may be that paralysis is worse when polio hits older ages and that polio may be more often fatal in older persons than it s in infants. He thinks field research may stop polio before laboratories pro duce vaccines or other medicines. EielU research is looking for the now unknown ways in which polio spreads.
