Oregon Draft Boards Face Class Scarcity PORTLAND - (JP) Oregon draft boards by May or June may scrape the bottom of the barrel of 19 to 29-year-old men classified 1-A. Col. Francis W. Mason, deputy state director of selective service, said the Multnomah county board was already reaching for 20-year-olds alter exhausting Ihe available 21 to 25 year-old 1-A group. He reported the March quota for the state would be 750 to 775 men. Jackson county selective ser vice board chairman Guy Apple while reported not enough men to fill pending quotas. Applewhite said there were less than 100 class 1-A men in that county for January February calls. Mason said this condition was not general. The deputy director said many young men held induction post ponements because of college at tendance. This will change in June, he said. Antonelli identified the assailant as Eugene Milter, 42. . He said Miller wounded himself ! and two other persons, one of them a child of three. ! The rlain boy wag Henry John ! Rost. ! Antonelli said Miller went on his shooting rampage apparently out of jealousy. He said Miller had threalened Mrs. Isabella Lober, who lives in the house, after she refused to see hjm. As reported bv Antonelli, Miller first shot Mrs. i.ober's 40-year-old husband. Walter, injuring him ser- ! iously, and Ihen fired twice at Mrs. tlxber herself who with her small I son and the Rost boy fled toward the back of the house. I One shot struck the Rost boy, a t distant relative of Mrs. Lober. and the second hit the younger child. Mrs. Lober was uniniured. Miller then wounHed himself in Ihe head. He was charged with murder, and a police ward placed over him at the hospital. The Rev. Kenneth Dooley of Eu gene (pictured above), will be the guest speaker and soloist this Sun day night at the North Roseburg church in their observance of New Year's Eve. Mr. Dooley is pastor of the Bailey Hill Community church in a suburban area o f Eugene, and is a graduate student at the University of Oregon. For two years he sang with the "King's Envoys" male quartet from Pa cific Bible college, of Azusa, Calif. The evening's activities will be gin with the evening service at 9 p. m., rather than the usual 7:30 hour, with the Rev. Mr. Dooley providing the special music as tenor soloist and trombonist, i n addition to bringing Ihe evening message. Informal activities will begin at 10:15 p. m., including sleight-of-hand performances by Mr. Dooley, and refreshments for all. Krom 11:30 p.m. to 12:05 a.m., the entire congregation will join in a watch night service of prayer for peace in the New Year. The evening's activities are sponsored by the Youth Fellowship for the entire congregation. The public is invited to attend. ' - Diversion Of Funds To Be Tax League Topic The Douglas County Taxpayers league will meet in the Hotel Ump qua Saturday at 1:30 p.m, to deter mine what action shall be taken by the group in diverting the county and city's budget funds from non essential to defense uses, reported league Secretary H. O. Pargeter. From every part of Ihe county, representatives will come to vote on the methods to increase funds for defense on city, budgets .at the expense of such things as hous ing. The problem will be dealt with on both the county and stale levels regarding the stand the group will take in bringing about legislation toward this end, said Pargeter. I Rent Controls Lifted In Multnomah County WASHINGTON (Pi Housing expediter Ti"he E. Woods today removed rent controls in Portland, Ore. He acted on the basis of a reso lution adopted by the city council declaring that a shortage of rental housing no longer exists in Port land. Woods also lifted controls from unincorporated localities in Clack amas, Multnomah and Washington counties in Oregon and dark, county, Washington. Controls also were lifted from all incorporated communities in Mult nomah coir., including Fairview and Troutdaie. Truman Approves Yugo Aid Money WASHINGTON (PI Presi dent Truman today signed legis lation providing an additional S3H, 000.000 in food aid for drought- stricken Yugoslavia.. I The fund raises to approxi mately S69.O0O.0OO the amount of American assistance to the Balkan nation, which is Communist ruled but is at odds with Russia. Mr. Truman had asked congress for the money to avert a famine as a result of a Yugoslav crop failure. He also said it was needed "to help preserve the independ ence of a nation which is defying the savage threats of Soviet im perialists. Congress will not have to ap propriate any new money for the program. Actually, the hill authorizes the diversion of S50,1XK),0O0 in Marshall plan funvls to Yugoslavia. But $12, 000,000 in recovery funds, plus S6. 000,000 in import - export bank loans and approximately S13.00". 000 in military aid funds, already has been made available to the Yugoslavs. Shipments of food, grain and other supplies started flowing in to Yugoslavia in November. The I military aid money was used only to provide food for Marshall Tito's army of 30 to 32 divisions, the lar gest standing armed force in Eu rope outside Russia. Born only 48 hours apart in 1877 in Idiana, Mr. and Mrs. t'lar ence Guy Evans had been married 44 years. Mrs. Evans died Christ mas night of coronary thrombosis Her husband succumbed at gen eral hospital 41 hours later of ar terial sclerosis. "Thank God that neither knew of the other's death," said their son. Raymond. "Their wedding. anniver sary would have been on New Year's Eve."
