New Federal Beef Grades Released SAN FRANCISCO (,W New federal beef grades go in'o e feet Fr day, Floyd Forbes, presidmt of the Western Stales Meat Packers association; ' said the chfnged grades would appear on retail meat counters almost immedi ately. The change in grades, he added, wli not affect prices. Tne present prime and 'loice grades, which together mak? u n about 10 percent of all beef sold will be combined under the name ."( "prime." Ihe present "good" grad will bi? called "choice." Fmaller-sized cuts from yuun! animals, formerly included uider "commercial'' grade, will be called food." The rest of the "commercial" graue, meat from more mature ?n.mals, utility, cutter and ennner j,;-n(ios. are unchanged Forbes said "these beef giading changes bring the gradee jr. line wilh changes which have occurred i-ince grades were first established 23 years ago." FOR Vr. Meats Join Price Trends Upward During This Week By Th. Attoflalrd Pru Helail prices of manv foods pushed hiajer this week as cold weather spread across mcit of'Sm,tn run" ,l'le en,'re. "Miire lmb cuts were off a shane in scattered sections, but retail meat sources said higher wholesile quo tations indicated an upward trciid in consumer prices. Higher in most produce depart ments were beets, broccoli, Brus sels sprouts, cabbage, yellow g:olc onions, cauliflower, cucumbers, peppers and spinach. Burttrr Trend Upward Butter was working higher in many cities following word that the Agriculture department hrd suspended sales of its buttor hold ings to find out how much it had left. The government's st.ickr of I'Utter, acquired under the price support program, had dwindled 'rom nearly 200,000.000 pounds in mid-summer to around 70.00,0',0 la.st week as distributors bought large quantities. Siime trade authorities say this sharp cut in surplus butter storks may result in a price jump, con tending the only thing that has held down prices has been t e i-overnment's willingness to sell its holdings at comparatively low quotations. The Agriculture department tl is weeli announced it will allow mar ketings of 8.000.000 tons of sugar i- (lie U. S. in the new year '50. 0O0 tons more than estima'd c.in sumption in 1950. Vi.e department's production and marketing administration hcat'lincd pork and sweet oo'atois on its list of plentiful foods for thrltty buying this week. Here's the administration's na tional list of foods likely' to he relatively low-priced in January because of abundant s u o p 1 y apples, oranges, grapefruit, crsr.-bcr.-ies, potatoes, onions sauer kraut, pork, broiling chicken.-, fro zen fish fillets, shrimp, cr.'tage cheese, peanut butter and honey.
