Horatio Alg-or never dreamed up a better success story than that of the Jones brothers, who enter this territory under the firm name of Mar-Linn Timber company. They conceived the idea that there was a market for low grail plywood: that plywood could lie ued for sheath ing and other purposes without the expense of facing with select materials. Kvery logging operation leases a large amirtint of tim ber on the ground logs not suitable for normal plvwood or mill use, but still containing some usable material. This Hmrn timber is a nuisance ahJ expense to the owner, who is required by law to dispose of it by burning. The Jones hrnthers reasoned, that if someone was willing to clean up these lands, they should be able, to obtain the material at comparatively low cost. So they started the Pacific Northwest's first plywood salvage, operation. To date, they report they have never had enough material left in the woods to demand a slash fire. Currently they are salvaging around 40 million board feet of logs annually from the Ibanon-Kugene areas, and expect to garner 20 million board feet or more annually from the Roseburg section.
