(Pic ture by Paul Jenkins) De Pour Infantry Chorus Program Will Be Varied c Patricia Mayo To Head Cancer Society's Unit The American Cancer society an nounces the appointment of Miss Patricia Mayo of Rm-rhmg as the new Douglas county commander for the coming year. Mi.il Mayo and Mrs. Iva Cowan of Vonralla have just returned from a two-day conference of the society in Portland. The entire conference was focused on the work of the American Cancer society as a per sonal "investment" for each in dividual to continue the vast edu cational and research programs of the society. According to Miss Mayo, the county nrganiiation hopes t o greatly slreng'hen and extend the work of volunteers throughout the county in getting the knovn facts of the disease befwe the people. Since early recognition and med ical teatmenl greatly i.irrcases the chance for complete cure, it is es sential that all people know some thing of the easily recognizable early symptoms. To assjst in this work of educa tion, the national offices of the American Cancer society provide a variety of educational materia! such as special films, literature, displays and qualified speakers. It is hoped that enough volunteers will participate in the program to make this material available to every social or fraternal group in the county, said Miss Mayo. Thuri Dee. 7. Honor Society Plans Activities Mrs. Djjjhne Riffe was hostess Monday evening, Dec. , to the members of- the National Honor society of Rosehurg senior high school. Mrs. Riffe Is the advisor for Ihe group. During the business meeting, plans were made for the induction of new members into the society on Jan. 10. Committees appointed for Ihe service are: program, Hope Stubbs; refreshment, Marlene Lewis, Dorine Lower y and Janet ' Foster; and induction committee, Vic Sanders and Lauren Loveland. The club decided to adopt some needy family for Christmas, fur nishing them with gifts and i Christmas dinner. A committee was also appointed to Investigate means of cooperarling with the Junior Red Cross in Ihe high srhool. The mem bers of this committee are Bob Church, Joan Long and Dorine Low ery. Thursday, Pec. T, was designated as the day for the honor society to hold cake end candy aale at the high school. The proceeds of the sale will be used for the in duction service, sponsorship of a page in the high school annual and financing the various services Winifred Williams is in charge of the club performs about the school, the sale. Frank Loesser de Paur. The latter, a story of the infantry, is dedicated i to the memory of Capt. Clayton S. Rockmore. killed in ac tion Feb. 24, 19W, on lwo Jima. Pica Renewed To Halt Slot Machine Shipping WASHINGTON -f.T Attorney General MrGralh renewed an ur gent plea today that Congress pro hibit interstate shipment of slot machines. He told chairman Fdwin C Johnson of Ihe Senate Interstate Commerce committee, in a letter McC.ralh made public that "with each pasing day" the need for a law banning shipment of the nne armcd bandits "becomes more ap parent." Ward Schilling, operating Ihe 2M ncre farm, used reed canary grass to control the erosion. The grass had been doubling itself every year. Schilling says he doesn't plan to larin it. however nor the sur rounding upland. The upland has been erodini too severely to he cropped, he said. He will use the section for pasture.
