BLAKESLtl iBy Th Associated Pnui KANSAS CITY. Kansas (.? The University of Kansas medical school is making progreta in its study of the No. 1 uspect n the cause of cancer. This suspect is nucleic acid, a substance present in all living tis sues. Dr. Rebert E. Stowell. director of the Kansas university cancer research program, described t h work. It is supported by the Na tional Cancer institute, American Cancer society, the U. S. Atomic Knergy commission and private donors. "We are looking," Dr. Stowell said, "for the substances that con trol growth, because cancer is ab normal growth. It is extremely im portant to identify them, because we could hope 0 conrol h t grown f cances. "The bei pspect is nucleic acid and nucleo-proteins the Ut ter being proteins containing this the genes, which control heredity. "Ue have a number of leads. We know there are two types of the acid and that cancer cells contain excess nucleic acid. Also that X rays and ultra-violet rays, both of which can cause cancer, alter the acid. "The viruses that cause animal cancer likewise contain the a c i d. So do the particles called the 'milk factor' that cause breast cancer in mice." 1 All living cells, cancerous or healthy, are rounded houses so tiny the. can be seen only in mi croscopes, yet filled with literally hundreds of little chemical ma chines. The job under way here is j to see what the acid is doing among the machines. j Test cells are frozen in a frac tion of a second in liquid nitro gen at nearly 300 degrees below lero. This kills them but leaves the parts intact. They are dried and sliced, sometimes into 250 sections from a single cell. The specimens then are atudied by six groups of scientists. Republicans In Red In Fight For Congress Control WASHINGTON (.T) Three maior Republican organisations re ported they have spent more than tl .000.000 in the battle for the con trol of Congress in next week's election. That's about (TO.OUO more than they took in. The tiOP financial statistics were filed with the clerk of the House under the federal corrupt practices , act. No comparable reports were I filed by the Democats, but were expected late this week. The Republicans filed these sep arate reports: 1. Republican national commit tee: receipts from Jan. 1 to Oct. 26 were pal, 107 against an outlay of $78.441. 2. National Republican Congres sional committee: receipts from Jan. 1 to Oct. 25 were J.115,6.1 against expenses of S.1I1.SM. From Sept. 1 to Oct. 25 the committee took in Sin.V4.T6 nd spent $145,973. 3. Republican Senatorial commit tee: receipts from Sept. 1 to Oct. 2.1 were (45.218 and expenditures $98,974. The committee did not list in its latest report its receipts and expendtures earlier this year. Large disbursements from the senatorial committee's coffers in cluded these Republican senatorial nominees: Senator Morse of Oregon, $2,500; Waller Williams of Washington, $5,000; Senator Taft of Ohio $5,000. The CIO Political Action commit tee also reported it has operated in the red financially this year, taking in $310,227 and spending (3K2.K60 from Jan. 1 to Oct. 24. The CIO did better, thou5h, in its "educational account," which concentrates on state elections. The "educational account" took in $109, 376 and spent $.'i6.83R, including con tributions of $7,500 to the campaign of James Roosevelt for governor of California and $12,500 to the Ches ter Bowles gubernatorial campaign in Connecticut, both Democrats. The American Federation of La bor's League for Political F.dura tion reported total receipts of $514, 584 from Jan. 1 to Oct. 26 but did not total its long itemized list of expenditures.
