We treat it with respect and refer to its legs as "limbs." It has 'em, all four, it't oven it table heiaht. Four unitt (two work), and a bit tcorched around the edget 20.00 WATER HEATER A brand new Columbia electric water heater. All wot fine until the people who haul things in trucks got at it. When it arrived in Rosebur? there were some chips and dents on it that weren't standard equipment. Now we have it and don't want it. 52-gollon capacity. Peopla break mora tops than bottoms. So we ordered extra tops, too many extra tops. We've tried ta make It all coma out even but gave up. Gas gangrene it a wound infec tion caused by germs that live in soil. Armies fear it because of the possibility of the ..winded being contaminated where they fall. A Canadian doctor told the Amer ican Public Health association that Malislici for Wcrld War II "show that no marked progress has been achieved since 1918 in the specific treatment of gas gangrene in war wounds" despite the use of such drugs as the sulfas and penicillin. And, said Dr. Victorien Fredetle of the University of Montreal, "slill less has been accomplished in the way of preventive immunization. " But he declared "new hope" for a vaccine is offered by a substance recently found in cultures of "Clos tridium perfringens" the princi pal germ involved in gas g a n grene. He calls it the "bursting factor" because he believes it to be the activating agent that causes toxin, or poison, from the germ to pro duce infection. And yet. said the doctor, this separate factor in itself does not have the poisonous properties of toxin. Also, it appears to set up immunity to the germ's action when it is injected into expert animals. Oiina Pigs Survive Tests In testa with guinea pigs, he re lated, vaccinated animals all sur vived "challenge" doses of gas gan grene germs. In contrast, 80 percent of one group of unvaccinated animala were killed, and 58 percent of an other group. In another report. Dr. A. R. Woodburne. Denver. Colo., skin spe cialist, told of a new wait treat ment. It involves use of liquid nitrogen, which "boils" when it is placed on the wart producing a tempera ture of 180 degrees below sero as it changes from a liquid to a gas. Thus, said Dr. Woodburne, the wart is frozen, and falls off in from one to two weeks. The doctor said the nitrogen treatment "doesn't leave scar or a raw open trea, as is usally the rase with such treatments as X-ray, drv ice, acetic acid and other acids." -ST - ) . '.' :"..;:." Alaska-J.fn-A 17-year-old high school youth, David Osborne, became Fairbanks' third polio victim Monday. The boy was stricken last Friday and was put into a respirator Sunday. Earlier polio victims included a child at the I.add air fnne base and an Eskimo from Point Bar row. Meanwhile, hospilal attendants said Julian Rivers, son of Alaska's former attorney general, appeared to be recovering.
