This was the task that confronted the trustees of the Ford Founda tion two years a so. Tha Ford Foundation, now about to begin full-scale activities, is the richest private philanthropic insti tution in the world. H was created bv tha Ford automobile family. The foundation owns Ford Jitotor company stock and other assets valued at 2.18 million dollars. Men familiar with Ford opera tions sav this stock would be worth much more, if it were ever on the market. They estimate tnn the foundation's assets should yield income of at least 50 million dol lars a year, to be used ior human welfare. The trustees, headed by Henry Ford II, appointed a committee of educators who made a lengthy atudv. during which they inter viewed more than 1,000 leading cit izens. Now, the pyysical sciences are being aided more than ever before by the government and industrial concerns. And many non-profit corporations are turning to the less explored and more controversial fields of human relations, where government olten fears to tread. Before the name Ford leaped to the top of the philanthropic list, two names dominated the field of private foundations for half a cen tury Carnegie and Rockefeller. Andrew Carnegie, the steel maker, gave away $350,000,001) Two-thirds of it went into big foun dations, such as the Carnegie cor poration, which now is rated the second largest foundation in the country, surpassed only by the Ford Foundation. The third largest is the Rocke feller Foundation. This is one of a number established by John D. Rockefeller and John D. Jr., who gave more than $550,000,000 be tween them. Strike Of London Gas Workers Puts Leaders In Prison LONDON VP! A 21 -day wild cat strike by London gaa workers collapsed today under pressure from the labor government. A few hours after ten alleged leaders of the walkout were sen tenced to a month in prison, the 1.400 strikers decided at a mass meeting to return to work Monday. In addition to the legal action under a law banning unofficial strikes in the public utilities filed, the government had marshaled soldiers and sailors to man the gas works if necessary.
