Sept. 27, to say goodby" to the Pennell family at a surprise party. . , Mrs. Ada Pennell. widow of the late Howard Pennell is moving to Myrtle Creek to be near her brother, Ralph Young, and her son, Morris Pennell, a veteran of World War II who it re-joining the ijavy. The Pennell family formerly owned and operated the Tiller store and postoffice and have been residents of the neighborhood for 23 years. R. Ireshments were served and the evening was spent visiting and playing games. Those enjoying the evening were Mr. and Mrs. Clar ence L. Hartley, Mr. ana airs. Charles King, Mr. and Mrs. George A. Pike. Mrs. Yvonne Lanback and son. Hudson, Mr. and Mrs. King I.. Heiskell, Mr. and Mrs. Anton Erlebach. Joseph J. Anlauf of Myrtle Creek celebrated his 83th birth day anniversary Sept. 4 and in honor of the occasion Mr. and Mrs. Norman Anlauf of Canyon ville were host an hostess at a dinner for him. Mr. Anlauf has been a resident , of Myrtle Creek since Be ' lore moving to the ranch on the Days Creek cul-ott road where he : now resides he owned and operated , a blacksmith shop. They are the old UUd r'etiows ouuding wnicn now houses Greer's Generator shop, the Cornutt house and Mrs. brnma Huick s house. Mr. Anlauf was born in 1865 in Pittsburgn, Pa. When he was five years old he moved west with his paiviits and family, lie was the uexi oldest of live boys and two girls. They crossed the plains by train to San Francisco and then took a boat to Portland. They settled at Anlauf on -a farm which is a mile from Anlauf station near Cottage Grove where the family grew up. His sister, Mrs. Bertha Berg who is now 87, lives in Los Angeles. Two younger brothers, P. A. An lauf and Prank Anlauf both live in Cottage Grove. Mr. and Mrs. Anlauf were mar ried at Knob, Calif, in 1900 and will celebrate their golden wedding an niversary Oct. 28. MELROSE HORIZON CLUB IS ORGANIZED RECENlLY The Melrose Horizon club was organized at the home of Mrs. Amy Kruse, at Melrose Sept. 27. The officers elected were: president Darlene Kruse; vice president, Dorothy Finn; secretary, Char lotte Sands; treasurer, Anita Herrman, and scribe, Phyllis Williamson. Chairman appointed for the rec reation committee was J e a n i n e Conn and chairman for the re freshment committee was Donna Barker. Those present were Jeanine Conn, Gail Conn, Darlene Kruse, Phyllis Williamson, Donna Sund berg, Charlotte Sands, Dorothy Finn, Anita Herrman, Donna Barker and the advisors, Mrs. Amy Kruse and Mrs. Joe Strickling. The next meeting will be held at the home of Amy Kruse on Oct. 4. WINCHESTER EXTENSION UNIT TO HOLD MEETING The Winchester Home Extension unit will meet Thursday, Oct. S, at 10 a.m. at the home of Mrs. Kussell Knutson, 4415 N. Stephens. The county home extension agent, Mrs. Corinne McTaggart f, will be in charge and rhe topic will be "Making relt Bags. A demonstration will he held with several patterns and different mat erials being shown. Everyone attending is asked to bring a sack lunch. Cake and cof fee will be served. Each member is asked to brin at least two ladies not now mem bers. All interested are invited to attend. Kent and Mrs. R. B. Reed will serve on the ' demotions committee. Plans were made for the ba.ar, which will be an event of the tirst week in November. Roberts, and Mr. and Mrs. Mrlvin Howard spent Sunday at the How ard cabin near Scnttsburg. Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Davidson formerly from Hemit, Calif., have moved to the Dave Ruse place in Elkhead. Mrs. Davidson was given a hand kerchief shower at a surprise birth d.iy party at her home recently. Paul Flurry is slowly recovering from bad bruises and several mis placed vertebrae, suffered when he fell off his barn. Mrs. Flurry, who was visiting in Los Angeles, was called home to attend him Avery Lasswell and son, Billy, and Mr. Russell Wamsley spent last weekend at the Lasswell cot tace at Neskowtn. Mrs. Audrey Roche and daugh ter of northern California spent the weekend here visiting at the parental Rogers home. Miss Thelma Cooper, teacher at Reaverton. and her father. Joe Cooper, of Portland spent the weekend visiting at the George Zuhl home. Mr. and .Mrs. Marvin Thompson and family spent the weekend vis iting Mrs. Thompson's mother in Albany. Mr. and Mrs. Tim Miller moved to a new location, known as the George Bull place north of town. They recently purchased it from Mr. and Mrs. Herman Thiel. Mr. and Mrs. Everett Curtis and son spent the weekend visiting Mrs. Curtis' sister and family at Reedsport. Mrs. Helen Brawn of Pendleton is visiting at the Gus Peret home for a few days. Miss Louise Merk. who has been employed at the U. S. National bank at Drain for two years, will leave this week for Portland, where she has employment in the main office of the bank. Miss Shir ley Hichley. employed at the Red and White store, Yoncalla, for two years, will lake her place at the Drain bank.
