Longshore Union Strikes Back At Ouster From CIO SAN FRANCISCO . "We ire lar better off out than we ever were in," longshore officers com mented on their union's ouster from the national CIO. The union's president, Harry Bridges, was not available for per sonal comment. However, head quarters of the International Long shoremen s and warehousemen s union issued the following state ment: "Officers of the ILWU greeted the news of the organization's ouster from the CIO with this com menl: 'We are far better off out than we ever were in.' "Further commenting, the offi cers referred to ILWU president Harry Bridges' speech before the last convention of CIO in which he stated that National CIO had be come a racketeering organization far departed from it? founding principles. " 'National CIO," the ILWU offi cers repealed, 'is now a political dictatorship run fully for the bene fit of its national officers and their pay roller who draw fabu lous sums in salaries and expenses and deny the rank and file work ers any say over their political and economic destiny. It resulted from a cross between the lemon cucumber and several other varieties. Lacking the usual hard shell, it can be eaten skin and all like a candy bar. And Mrs. Pierce, who has done some experimenting with them in her kitchen, reports iney make su perior pickles. S..UNsppty 3 port hcrt it j ma jar Red goat Atomic Pile For Peaceful Purpose Gives Promise Of Future Wonders By SUMNiR AHLBUM Ever since America began lacing up its military boots again this summer, Americans have been bombarded with atomic arguments, fears and apprehensions, suddenly revived by memory of what hap pened at Hiroshima five years ago. There have been clarion calls to drop the bomb in Korea, even on Moscow, and Ret it over witn. (And there have been saner declarations that we are not yet engaged in a struggle of atomic proportions.) There have been dramatically frightening articles on what would happen to us if the bomb dropped in our neighborhood. (And there have been more sober explan ations, in the Atomic Energy Com mission's own handbook, that dis counted a lot of old fears.) It is true enough, to be sure, that America is engaged i n an atomic arms race, and that pro duction of atomic bombs is pro bably at an all-time high. But there is hopeful evidence, too, that the atom may be put to work at peace ful pursuits in time to be one of the wonders of this generation. One such sign comes from the AEC's Brookhaven national labor atory at Upton, N. Y. There the other afternoon a mild and bespec tacled scientist in shirt leeves gave the signal that started the awesome forces of nature at work in America's first postwar atomic pile. Brookhaven is probably the most powerful atomic furnace in the world, but it is dedicated solely to scientific research. In its reactor, neutrons will be produced to help chemists learn more about the ele ments; biologists, more about life's processes, and medical experts, more about the mystery of dis eases. In a few months, when the fur nace at Brookhaven reaches its full force, it will be a small-scale example of another job the atom could do for man's good. The 30,000 kilowatts it will be produc ing then, could, if converted, pro vide all the electrical needs of a small town. The electricity Brookhaven could make is only a symbol, however. Other laboratories are working feverishly to build an atomic en gine for submarines, and there is great hope they will have suc ceeded by late 1951. Once before submarines showed the way to a new power for transportation in the development of the diesel engine that is now fast crowding coal out of railroad locomotives. Brookhaven's dedication to r e search is an encouraging milestone in the atomic age. UP) Public transportation waa cheap in Nan ticoke Monday. Shortly after drivers of the Hu dak bus lines went on strike, owner O. M. Hudak enlisted the aid of a number of relatives and put his buses back in service. But each of the buses was pre ceded by a car driven by a strik ing bus driver offering free rides to all comers. Talking motion pictures got their start back in 1908. One of the first patents was issued to Eugene Agustin Lauste, an engineer who worked for Thomas A. Edison. PORTLAND UP) Two youths charged with speeding on an east side thoroughfare here were sen tenced Monday by District Judge Fred O. Olson to five days in jail and fined $25 each. Jack R. Sowles, 19, and Richard Glen Hanson, 20, were arrested on 2nd avenue.
