Kiwanis Adopts 3 Resolutions, Rejects Fourth SPOKANE -.Pu The Pacific Northwest Kiwanis convention kicked out one proposed resolu tion on Canadian imports Tuesday but passed three others in routine fashion The delegates quickly turned thumbs down on a resolution that would support a curb on certain Canadian imports into the United States. Many of the delegates are members of clubs in Canada. The other resolutions, passed without dissent, called on the United Nations to warn Russia that she would be held responsible for any further Communist aggres sion; approved the UN action in Korea; and, demanded an open investigation of persons connected with' the theft of government docu ments in the Amerasia case. Fresh Blutb.rry (or Huckleberry) Pit Two tablespoons quick-cooking tapioca, V cup granulated sugar, 'i cup brown sugar, firmly packed, V teaspoon salt, 1 quart blueberries, pastry for two-crust 9-inch pie, 1 tablespoon butter. Combiife quick-cooking tapioca, sugars, salt and berries; let stand 15 minutes, or while pastry is be ing made. Line a 9-inch pie pad with V of the Dastrv rolled Vi-inch thick. Roll remaining pastry W- men inicK. -rut pie sneil with fruit mixture. Dot with butter. Moisten edge of pastry with cold water. Cut strips from rolled pastry and adjust in lattice across top of pie. Flute rim. Bake in hot oven (425 degrees r.j u minutes, or until syrup boils with heavy bubbles that do not Durst. Mote: For extra juicy fruit pies, serve them a little warm. For thicker pies, let cool about 4 hours or longer before serving. Ever try a sweet omelet for dessert? Time you did if your family relishes good things to eat. Blueberry Omelet (2 servings) To two egg yolks, slightly beaten, gradually beat in 14 cup confectioners' sugar. Add two tea spoons grated lemon peel. Fold into four egg whites, stiffly beaten with 14 teaspoon salt. Melt l'A teaspoons butter in a skillet. Pour in the omelet mixture. Cook over low heat, covered. While cooking slash-across several times to permit heat to penetrate the slight bottom crust. When done but soft on the inside, crease through center with a knife. Add one cup cultivated blueberries. Tramportotion Agriculture Federal Reserve Board Moves To Check Inflation WASHINGTON (. The gov ernment has moved to curb bank credit in a new slop-inflation ma neuver. The step was taken by the Fed eral Reserve board last night when it approved a boost from lMi to 14 percent in the discount rate of the Federal Reserve bank of New York. Such rate changes usually spread to the rest of the federal reserve system. The idea is this: when federal reserve member banks make a loan on a note, they can get the money tied up in the loan from a federal reserve bank, less a sum known as the discount rate. In cu asing the discount rate thus tends to restrict bank loans. The new Ha percent discount rate is effective Monday, Aug. 21. II was approved by the reserve board and the federal open mar ket committee, an inter-agency body, after loans and holdings of corporate and municipal securities held by reserve member banks rose by $1,500,000,000 within six weeks. Secre tary of the Treasury Snyder an nounced that insurance companies, savings banks and other institu tional investors now may buy up to $1,100,000 worth of series F and G government bonds this vear. The former limit was SlOO.OOb. This will provide the govern ment' with ready funds without contributing very much to infla tionary pressures. Such investors usually buy government bonds as investments to lay aside until they mature. Commercial banks, by contrast, can use government bonds as (he basis for loans, in flating credit. New U. S. Notes Offered Secretary Snyder also announced a big new offering of treasury notes. Two series of IVi percent 13-month treasury notes will be offered in exchange for four se ries of maturing securities total ling $13,570,000,000. Treasury officials said this is possibly the biggest refunding op eration in department history. Evangelist Draws Big Crowd Despite Downpour PORTLAND UP) Evangelist Bill Graham preached in a pour ing rain Wednesday to a police estimated crowd of 4,000 to 5,000 persons in the south park blocks. Several hundred sang hymns in the rain for an hour before the meeting started. Police, who had prepared for a possible turn-out of as many as 20,000, said downtown traffic was not disrupted. The meeting was at S. W. Clay street, well south of the business district. Rail lines to Vancouver said they are hauling capacity loads both ways. Norlin, state highway engineer, was present at the Can yonville school board meeting Saturday to explain the offer made by the stale to the school on the proposed highway right of way. The State Highway commission will exchange 2.56 acres of the Slock property for 1.4 acres of the school property. The commis sion would also grade and lay pipe up the creek and fill across the entire width. The Canyonville project is part of an overall improvement prog ram for highway 99. The school board passed a motion that the board, accompan ied by I. N. Grey, should appear before the highway commission if possible, to slate its case in an effort to reach an understanding. Other action by the school board: James Deaton was hired as bus driver. Mrs. Alvira Ward of Days Creek appeared before the board in regard to a salary adjustment at the time of her termination of employment.
