EPISCOPAL RUMMAGE SALE TO BE HELD An all-day rummage sale, be ginning at B a.m. at the Episcopal parish hall on East Cass street, will be sponsored Saturday, Aug. 28, by the women of St .George's Episcopal church. Mrs. John Pierce and Mrs. John Robinson are co-chairmen and are requesting members and friends to leave their donations for the sale at the parish hall by Friday, Aug. 25. D. OF U. V. Ml Mortgage Firm Moves Records Just In Case PHILADELPHIA W The Fidelity Bond and Mortgage Co . has moved duplicates of its book keeping records to a Pocono moun tain retreat for safety's sake "in case of a bombing attack on Phil adelphia." 'We are not alarmists." said firm president Joseph N. Gorson, "we merely feel that this is an additional type of insurance." The records cover approximately $50,000,000 in mortgages on some 8,000 properties. Ada Durch of Elgarose, was one of 24 being graduated from the school of nursinng at Providence hospital in Portland, Aug. 13. She is remaining at the hospital as a nurse. THELMA HANSON The Progressive 13 4-K Sioek club of Elgarose met with the West Melrose Stock club to enjoy a tour of the members homes and inspection of their stock on Sun day afternoon. The meeting was under the direction of Andrew Hanson, local club leader, and Merle Sanders. Those taking the tour were: Donna Barker, Carol Manning, Faye Simpson, Gordon and Stanley Tuel, and merle Sand ers of the Melrose group. Those with the Elgarose group were: John Tinker, Lester Pierce, Don ald and Donna Sundberg, Char lotte, Joe and Glen Sand, Michael and Dixie Wooten, Dick and Sally Brown, Dickie Sjogren, and Glen, Donald and Margie Hanson. Pete Simnson. Vern Wooten. Lee Brown and Andrew Hanson furnished cars. . i On Tuesday evening the Elea rose club met at the forks of the river for a weiner roast and sup per. The parents were invited. Mr. and Mrs. Warren Lucas, Mrs. Ada Durch, and niece and nephew, Carmen and Larry Cooper, were guests. Donna Sundberg had charge of the Jolly Nine 4-H can ning club. Sally Brown gave a demonstration in canning beans. Canning tips were given for roll call. Leave For Coast Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Pearson and daughter, Mary Lynn, of Roseburg Left Saturday for Neskowin to spend a week va cationing. Here Over Weekend Mr. a Mrs. Jeffery Currier of Corvallis spent the weekend in Roseburg as guests of the latter's parents, Dr and Mrs. C. B. Wade, on South Kane street. They came to attend the Gerretsen-Holmquist wedding Saturday evening at the Episcopal cnurcn. Mrs. uurrier is tne lormer Priscilla Wade of this city. Visit Smiths Mrs. C. A. Bar tell and Mrs. Al Menke spent a few days visiting Mr. and Mrs. George H. Smith at their cabin it Winchester. The Bartells have recently leased their hotel at Ar eata, Calif., to Mr. and Mrs Menke, who formerly lived in-Roseburg. After visiting relatives i n Salem and Portland, the Bartells expect to return to California to make their home. Back From Vacation Mrs. Ful ler Johnson returned to her work this morning in the circulation de- Jiartment of the News-Review, fol owing a two weeks vacation. Vacationing Mr. and Mrs. Le roy Inman and children, Janet, Larry and Cathy, of Roseburg have left for Springfield to spend a week vacationing and attending to pro perty interests. Mr. Inman is city editor of the News-Review. Back From Funeral Mrs. Clark Leedy has returned to Roseburg- from Sacramento, Calif., where she was called to attend the funeral of her mother-in-law, Mrs. J. C. Leedy. She accompanied Mr. and Mrs. Harry Leedy o f Portland to the funeral. Sundberg and Carmen Cooper. Marlene Barthlomy was a visitor. Marlene and David Barthlomy of Portland are visiting with their uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. George Sundberg and cousins Don ald and Donna Sundberg. Miss Doris Jean Durch, daugh ter of Mrs. Ada Durch, is ill of pneumonia at the Providence hos pital in Portland. Mrs. Durch left Thursday evening to be with her. Visiting at Dixon Home Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Boyce and daughter of Newberg have been houseguests of Mrs. M. Hazel Dixon at her summer place on the North Umpqua. Attend Festival Dr. and Mrs T. J. Wagoner and daughter, Helen, who reside on South Main t street in Roseburg, made a trip to Asniano last week to attend the Shakespearean festival. They sow the historical play. "Henrv IV," which was reported given in a true dramatic sense. Vacationing Mrs. Stanley Wright of Roseburg has left for Deane's resort at the coast t o spend her vacation. Mrs. Wright is office manager for the News Review. Return Heme Mrs. J. E. Saw yers and her sister, Miss Gertrude Rast, have returned to their home in Roseburg, following a few days as guests of Mrs. A. E. Kent at her summer home on the North Umpqua. Mrs. Kent has also re turned to her home on South Jackson street, following the sum mer on the North Umpqua. San Is Barn A son, Earl Bruce, waa born to Mr. and Mrs. Earl Oden Jr. of Lakeview, Ore., recently. Mrs. Bruce Elliott o f Roseburg left Saturday to spend a couple of weeks with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Oden. Mrs. Oden is the former Norma Jean Elliott of this city. Rummage Sale Dated The women of St. George's Episcopal church will sponsor a rummage sale Saturday, Aug. 26, beginning at 9 a.m., in the parish hall on East Cass street. Mrs. John Perce and Mrs. John H. Robinson are co-chairmen of the sale. Mem bers and friends are asked to leave donations at the hall not later than Friday afternoon of this week. Called For Duty Sgt. Leaman C. Dean, 34 of 1928 Fairmont St., ha) been called to active duty in the U. S. air force. He first entered the service in 1945 and served until 1946. He was in the Asiatic theater. Hold Picnic Some 400 persons attended the St. Joseph's academy church picnic at the Veterans pic nic grounds Sunday afternoon. A ball same betwen the vets and the church group ended in victory for the vets. Other games played include horseshoes, bowling and races for children. Wilbur " By ELSIf BROSZIO Elaine Harvey of Coquille, granddaughter of Mrs. Emma Harvey, has been spending a short vacation in Wilbur. Gladys Workman of Lebanon, is spending a few weeks visiting at the home of her brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Workman in Wilbur. Mr. and Mrs. George Short, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Trozelle of Suth erlin and Mrs. Charles Sands of Wilbur went deep-sea fishing Sun day and Wednesday at Winchester Bay. They report a nice catch and an enjoyable outing. Pa Jenkins, small son of Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Jenkins of Wilbur, fell from a hay mow in the barn and broke his arm in two places. He is reported as getting along well. Lloyd John McKay, son of the late John McKay and brother of Mrs. Virgil Smith, has been visit ing friends and relatives in Wil bur after an absence of 23 yean. He has just recently returned from Venezuela and Japan. He is with the Federal Bureau of Investiga tion in tne Oregon territory. Mr. and Mrs. C. R. France of Cloverdale were dinner guests Thursday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Everett Thomas in Wilbur. Mrs. Bridges of Olympia, Wash. has been visiting at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Forsberg in Wil bur. t Agnes Holcomb and Harold Groat of Portland spent the week end at the home of Agnes' par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hol comb, Wilbur. Mrs. L. Lahti and two sons, Bar rie and Bernard, Hespero, Al berta, Canada have spent a week visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Harvey. While here they visited the Oregon Caves and enjoyed a drive through the redwoods. Patrolman Killed ly Stings Of Bee Swarm GREENBOUGH, N.Y. CW Poi soning from yellowjacket stings caused the death of Patrolman J. Edward Brunner, 38, it was an nounced after an autopsy. Brunner died "Saturday three hours after he was stung by a swarm of yellowjackets as he tried the rear door of a vacant house while on patrol in nearby Harts-dale. Rice Valley By MRS. CECIL HARTFORD ' Mrs. Cecil Hartford and Mrs. Clara Hartford and their guests, Claudis Evans and his mother Mrs. Sarah Evans of Venus, Neb. drove to Winchester Bay and points south to Coquille and home via Roseburg last Friday. The Evans, after spending a week at the Hartford home, left Sunday for Vancouver, Wash.' where they will visit relatives. Donald and Nancy Grass of Yon calla, visited for a week in the home of their aunt, Mrs. Cecil Hartford in Green Valley. They re turned to their home Friday ac-. companied by Birneta Hartford, who will remain for a few days.
