But Bill Slater "Twenty Questions" program (Sun days, 8:00-8:30 p. m.), does know thanks to his wife, Marion. Bill points out that for his weekly broad cast, Mrs. Slater spends more than 20 hours a week in research work to provide him facts and figures that make sense. Instructors In First Aid Needed In Douglas County To comply with a request re ceived from Gen. George Marsh all, president of the American Red Cross, that 2,000,000 first aid in structors be trained throughout the United States, the Douglas County chapter is issuing an ap peal to local people interested in becoming qualified first aid in structors. According to George Smith, field representative for the State In dustrial Accident commission and Red Cross first aid chairman for Douglas county, approximately 1,000 people within the county have requested first aid training. In order to meet this heavy de mand, a cadre of qualified in structors must be trained first. It is the hope of the local Red Cross office that Douglas cor.nty citizens taking the 30-hour course, will in turn give their time as in structors in first aid classes. Those interested in becoming first aid instructors are asked to phone the local Red Cross office. It is hoped that at least fifty potential instructors can be con tacted immediately. Elkton By MRS. PHYLLIS A. SMITH A logging truck belonging to E. W. Ede burned on the Elkton Log ging company property Wednes day afternoon when a limb broke an air brake connection. When Ede started down the mountain with his load, he was forced to j-mp and let the truck go. The truck climbed a 10-foot bank and was destroyed by fire. Ede, who was hauling for the Haines Log ging company, was unhurt and the truck was covered by insur ance. The date of the Kellogg Juvenile rodeo has been changed to Sun day, Aug. 20. Elkton Centennial celebration will be held at the Beckley Picnic grounds, Sept. 10. A program is being arranged and the public is invited. Miss E 1 e n o r e Binder left Wednesday to attend the Junior Red Cross camp at Silver creek falls. Miss Binder is one of the two Douglas county representa tives to attend this camp. She will be gone 10 days. Mr. Joseph Hudson, who has been ill for some time, suffered a serious set back last week. Mr. and Mrs. Lenard Hudson of Sil verton visited the Hudsons on Sun day. Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Bossen of Portland came to Elkton to attend the Mason nicnic last Sunday and to visit with their sons, Rodger and Loyal, and with other rela tives and friends. Word has been received that Mrs. Hewlett Pontius is ill in- an Albany hospital. Dick Mower is spending a few davs fishing at the coast with his folks, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Mower of Snringfield. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Carlson and Mrs. Rachael Gorman of Klamath Falls are visiting with Mrs. R. O. Thomas. Mr. Carlson is a teacher in the Klamath Falls hi"h school. Miss Judy Soderback Is vaca tioning for two weeks at Coquille with her aunt Laura Allen. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Solomon and son, Merrit, are--on a vaca tion trip through Washington and Canada. Mrs. H. H. Listerud Is moving to Coquille where Mr. Listerud is emoloyed. Mr. and Mrs. Ted Taylor and family are spending a few days vacation at McCredie Springs. Boys receiving "Greetings" this week from Uncle Sam are: Bob Thomas, Ted Hansen, Martin Su loff. Warren Baker and Edward Doran. The Elkton city council Is spon soring a dance Saturday night, Aug. 19, at the IOOF hall, Pro ceeds will sponsor the Elkton prin cess for the north Douglas fair. Music will be by the three notes. Such figures, even for hospitals in this country, are "restricted" or secret, ht told a bouse armed services subcommittee studying hospital needs. The figure was given in a De fense department announcement that southern lumbermen met with representatives of the army corps of engineers. . The department said that Maj. Gen. Lewis A. Pick, chief of en gineers, was told at the confer ence that defense lumber needs can be taken in stride. It added that the department had been given new assurances that its requirements for the next 10 months can be met without un settling the market. The department said industry representatives agreed to hold lumber auctions once each month, or more often if the demand justified, at convenient locations throughout the south.
