( Fri- Schedule Of Events Arranged For Douglas County Fair Of 3 Days This Week Given Following is a list of events for the Douglas County (air Thurs day, Friday and Saturday: Dollar dinner contest contest ans prepare dinner for four with in time limit. Divided into junior and senior divisions. All 4-H cook ery Uland IV memberr who are in at least the thirii year of 4-H club work are eligible. Awards for first place in each division, $10; second place, $3, Winners will represent county at state fair Sept. 4 to 10. Held Friday 8-11:30, both junior and senior; noon to 3:30, junior; 5:30 to 9, junior and senior. Saturday 8 to noon, senior; 1 to 3:30 junior, all at fairgrounds kitchen. Cake baking contest contest ants bake a true sponge cake without baking powder or oil using soft wheat flour milled in Pacific Northwest. Open to all 4-H club members enrolled in cookery II, III and IV. Special awards given ! including gold medal to champion individual demonstrator and gold medal for each member of high i placing team demonstration. Also cash awards. Bread baking contest junior division contestants will bake one loaf of white bread; those in sen ior division, a loaf of bread plus one pan of rolls. Open to 4-H cook ery III or IV members who are in the third year or above ot 4-H club work. Winners represent county at state fair. First place winners in each division will be awarded a scholarship to the 1950 4-H summer school in Corvallis. Starts 8 a.m., Friday in fair grounds kitchen. Canning c o n t e s t contestants will prepare, pack .and process one pint jar of fruit. Divided into junior and senior divisions. Open to all 4-H canning club members. Winner will represent Douglas county at state fair canning con tests. Held from 7 to 9 p.m. Fri day in fairgrounds kitchen. Sewing contest contestants will make seams and hems in woolen materials. Open to 4-H clothing club members IV and V. Winners to represent county at state fair in Salem with part of expenses paid. Held a 1 p.m. to 3:30 Friday in fnirornunHe. Ifitnhan Style review exhibition of hand- sMteS&&Ms made garments by girls working on clothing club projects. A follow up of five style reviews in various districts of the county last May and June. Winner to receivp 4- ' scholorship to summer school at Oregon State college next June. Private judging of garments at junior high school auditorium Thursday at 1:30 p.m. Public mod eling of garments at Umpqua Paik Friday at 4 p.m. Girls wishing to appear in the Friday exhibition must appear for judging Thursday Livesock showmanship both 4 H and Future Farmers will par ticipate. Livestock of the two or ganizations will be displayed in the showmanship ring at the fair grounds including swine, sheep, goats, and cattle. Starts 1 p.m. Thursday by FFA followed by 4-H. Several other organizations and I I' " HA im. ir iriii J V v Novelty Race City Swimming Meet Feature A novelty race will be one of the features of the first annual Roseburg junior and senior all city swimming meet, to be held at the local pool Friday, Aug. 18, starting a 7 p. m. Race rules re quire participants be boys be tween the ages of 14 and 19 and be fully clothed, including shirt, hat. Dants. and shoes. The ranit will be 40 yards freestyle. The winner must Iinisn the race with all his clothes on, including the hat. There will be a whole pie tor tne winner. Aug. 17. Pugh also reminded all those who desire to enter that there Is no entry fee. Everything is free. The age range for this local meet is from seven to 19. There will be freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and medley races. High School Ttams To Exptriment Again PORTLAND m Oregon high school football teams will experiment again next fall this time with free substituting. Tom Pigott, secretary of th Oregon School Activities associa tion, said that the National Fed eration for High School Sports had designated the state to try out unlimited substitution, similar to that in college football. groups also enjoyed picnic affairs at the pa'rk Sunday. (Picture by Paul Jenkins) City Swimming Fixed By Jaycees Plans to sponsor the all-city swimming meet Friday at 7 p. m. at the municipal pool were made by the Junior Chamber of Com merce Monday night. The meet will be open to boys and girls of ages 7 to 19, and will feature all regular racing swim styles, together with diving contests. Ribbons will be awarded in each event. No admission will be charged. Entry blanks are available at the pool and must be filled out by Thursday noon. Glenn Scott, general chairman of the . Southern Oregon Invita tional Swimming meet, held last displays will consist of lumber specimens, seeds, cones, berries and other forest products along wih exhibits of vegetable pro ducts. Australia Names Team For Davis Cup Attempt BROOKLINE. Mass. WP) To the surprise of none of the tennis wise, Harry Hopman, non-playing captain of the Australian Davis Cup team, named a quartet to will make a fourth attempt to lift that international tennis tro phy from its U. S. defenders next week at Forrest Hills, N. Y. Hopman named Jack Bromwich, Frank Sedgman, Ken McGregor and George Worthington as his nation's forces for the challenge round. For some time it had taken for granted that they would be in the Australian lineup. weekend, reported that the affair was a sucess, and that all com mittees functioned in good order. The Jaycees broke about even fi nancially, the treasurer's report showed. All-in-all, said Scott, the affair was very worthwhile, and plans are definitely to go ahead witn another meet next year. A social evening for Jaycee members, their wives and guests was announced tor 8 p. m. sent 7 at the Moose hall. Bob McCarl will be in charge of arranging a floor show and Irv Brunn will be in charge of the kitchen. Several projects were discussed, including a soap box derby next year. McCarl and Duane Baker were named on a committee to investigate plans further. A safety campaign was also discussed, with Wayne Crooch delegated to mane a lurtner study. Mrs. Stoffers explained that the pool was made of yellow plastic and had been l'ollc ' up and placed in the front yard near the house.
