(Salon studio photo) Election Forecasts Listing Defeat Of 2 Senate Leaders Doesn't Disturb Politicians WASHINGTON (API The politicians most affected take with a grain of salt a prediction by Louis H. Bean that Senators Taft IR-Ohiol and Lucas ID-Ill.) will go down in defeat in the November election. Bean, a department of Agriculture economist who has at tracted attention by his political predictions in the past, forecast in a Look magaiine article that Republicans will gain in this year's voting but won't win control of Congress. But politicans generally dis counted many of Bean's findings primarily on past election trends because they were made without reference to political effects of the Korean fighting. He said Republicans had a 50-50 chance to beat Senator Taylor (D- idaho), who apparently already has been beaten in the Democratic pri mary. Bean listed Republican Senators Donell of Missouri and Millkin of Colorado as likely to join Taft in aeteat. Bean's prediction that Taft will be beaten in Ohio by state auditor Joseph Ferguson, the Democratic nominee, brought this comment from Taft: "Every year a new prophet arises to foretell the results of elec tions and disappears' just as rap id v after the elections." There was some evidence that Taft's friends think Bean's fore cast might be some help, since it could serve to help dispel overcon- fidence in the ranks ot the Uhio an's campaign workers. Lucas told a reporter he thinks Bean included him among those the economist predicted would be defeated "so he could sell his ar ticle." "It looks like he picked the heads of the two policy committees so that he would attract some at tention," Lucas said. Lucas heads the Democratic policy group and Taft the Republican. Bean forecast the biggest Repub lican gains in Connecticut, where he said Democratic Senators Mc Mahon and Benton are likely to be beaten. McMahon said he usually Isn't a betting n.an but he'd like to back with some cash his belief that Bean doesn't know what he's talking about so far as Connecticut is con cerned. Whitney LONE PINE, Calif. WV-Young Christopher Reynolds may lie dead in the snow only 300 feet from his goal, the top of the nation's high est peak, ML Whitney. A search party on the moun tain's perilous east face operated on that theory today after veteran mountaineer Harold Gates saw through binoculars what appeared to be a faded shirt close to the summit. Gates gave the location as di rectly across from Keeler needle, a pinnacle to the south of 14,496 foot Mt. Whitney. Night closed in before searchers could set out yes terday. Meanwhile, the young tobacco heir's mother, former torch singer Libby Holman, arrived in New York by plane from Paris. She was not immediately told that little hope is held for 17-year-old Chris topher. The boys started the climb nine days ago. The body of young Reynolds' companion, Steven Wasserman, also 17, was brought off the moun tain and met by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Stix -Wasserman, wealthy Philadelphians. The searching party reported finding a 10-foot nylon rope. frayed at the end, around young wassermans waist indicating that the rope may have been sev ered by the jagged cliff as the pair edged upward, closely linked together. .Wasserman's body was found at about the 11,500-foot level some 3,000 feet below where Gates spot ted the object that may prove to be young Reynolds. Today's search for the heir to a $7,000,000 cigaret fortune will be made by five members of the Si erra Mountain Climbing club who remained high on the peak all night to gee a good start. Shortage of railroad cars ac counts for pile-up most mills report only one-third of their requirements for rail transporter tion is being supplied. Mayor O'Dwyer Going To Mexico As Ambassador WASHINGTON (JP The White House announced that President Truman will nominate Mayor Wil liam O'Dwyer of New York City as ambassador to Mexico. Presidential Secretary Charles G. Ross told reporters the nomin ation will be sent to the Senate about Sept. 1. Ross said O'Dwyer would resign as mayor of New York about that time. The resignation will mean a mayority election campaign in New York this fall. In Mexico city, O'Dwyer would succeed Ambassador Walter Thurs ton, 56, a career diplomat Ross said Thurston would be given another top-level diplomatic assignment, but did not indicate what that assignment might be. O'Dwyer, 60, has been Mayor of New York since 1945. He first ran for the office in 1941 but was beat en that year by Fiorello H. I.a Guardia who was elected for a third term. O'Dwyer opposed Mr. Truman's renomination prior to the Demo cratic national convention in 1948 but quickly supported the President after his renomination. She sauntered down Broadway yeseterday, entered a liquor store and smashed $100 worth of bottled whiskey. Then she highballed far ther down the main stem, dashed into a woman's dress shop and hid under a pink negligee. Manpower Mobilization Aid Group Oregon Plan SALEM OP) A statewide la bor-management committee to help mobilize manpower for defense production will be appointed, Gov ernor Douglas McKay announced. The committee will work with Shriners, Families To Hold Picnic August 20 The annual Shriners picnic will be held Aug. 20, at Wolf Creek Forest camp on Little river, with Shriners, members of their fam ilies and out of town guests to attend. Bill Evans, picnic chairmam said the menu will include ham, fried chicken, baked ham and potato salad, relishes, ice cream and soft drinks (all you can eat). A stag party for Shriners only will be held Saturday afternoon and evening. Families and guests will assemble at the picnic grounds Sunday at 11 a.m. for the lunch, Softball games and children's events which will be featured. Shriners planning to attend are asked to bring sleeping bags and table service. the state unemployment compensa tion commission in making uniform rules for recuiting war workers. Earl R. Lovell, state employment service director, will be the chair man of the committee. "Although manpower shortages already are beginning to appear in certain classifications, we hope by early organization of these groups to help maintain an even distribu tion of essential workers among defense establishments, agricul ture, food processing lumber and other industries vital to our econ omy," Governor Mc Kay said. T. Morris Dunne, Chairman of the unemployment compensation commission, said his organization would work with the government and other states in "developing uni form patterns of operation for re cruitment, utilization and stabil ization of manpower for any emer gency that may develop. We hope to avoid large scale migration and dislocation of workers insofar as that is possible. He said also that labor-management committees for areas within the state would be appointed later. Born in Mayo, Ireland, O'Dwyer came to this country when he was 20 years old. A man ran in and grabbed Susie a nine-month-old Rhesus, a breed of small monkey.
