Forceps Removed From Woman After Five Years SALEM (VP) A pair of sur- rriaial (rirniini uaa frnm a Salem woman's abdomen Thurs- day after being embedded there for five years. The doctor who performed the opera tin said that the forceps were left in the woman when she was operated upon in California five years ago. The doctor, who declined to pl - low his name to be used, said the woman was very large, and that, the forceps were embedded in fatty tissue. The operation was performed it! Salem Memorial hospital, BMP Congress Yields To Spur Applied In Baruch s Talk By JAMES MARLOW . WASHINGTON UP) Old Bern ard Baruch lit a firecracker under congress and the president. The re sult: congress probably will give Pres. Truman powef to freeze prices and wages. ' If you looked at the lean face of the 80-year-old Baruch, who has been an economic adviser to presi dents, you'd guess he was shrewd enough with money to be rich, which he is. He came down to Washington last week and spoke his piece to congress, in effect, what he said was "don't play around, don't take chances, don't use half-way measures." After we got into the Korean lighting. Pres. Truman asked con gress to do some things to help pay for re-arming and stop infla tion. He asked for higher taxes, gov ernment confrols on buying-things-on-time, and enough government control over industry to say what firms could use what materials, and who could have them first. Far Short This fell far short of asking for all-out .controls, which would have to include controls over prices and wages. The president said he does not tninK iney re needed now. H" said he'd ask for them, if and when. Even so. what the president asked for was too much for Sen. Taft, Ohio Republican, and those who follow his line of thinking. Taft said the president wanted too much power in the controls he mentioned. This sort of divided thinking around her until last week when Baruch arrived on the scene. And what he told congress went like this: This is no time for business as usual or the middle of the road. If we're getting ready for war if it comes let's go all the way. If we fiddle around and let prices and wages get out of hand, we'll ruin the economy." Almost at once the feeling began to change. More and more con gressmen began to take up the Baruch line. And finally Tuesday Pres. Truman told congress in ef fect: "Okay, if you want to give me power to freeze prices and wages, go ahead. But don't do it in such way that 1 11 have to start freez ing them at once. Do it this way: "Pass a law saving I can put in price and wage controls immediate ly, when I think they re needed. That's what congress probably will do now: give the president stand-by power to freeze prices and wages. Pleasing This appears to be politically pleasing to congress, for it makes the actual invoking of such consum er controls a responsibility of the president not congress. At the same time, all this seems to have worked out pretty well for Mr. Truman. For one thing, as he pointed out, wage and price con trols are pretty controversial. If he had asked for them, at the same time he asked for the others, the whole business might have been delayed in congress because of the arguments bound to arise over wages and prices. And, as he noted, the controls he did ask for he wanted right away. Now. with Baruch making the pitch to congress and congressmen getting steamed up over ttaruch s advice, steamed up to the point of giving Mr. Truman more than he asked for, Mr. Truman is sitting pretty. Further, the way all this has come about must be pleasant to Mr. Truman's Democrats in con gress who face the voters in this fall's congressional elections. If the president had asked for wage and price controls right away and got them the governmenl might make a terrible mess trying to put them into effect without time for setting up machinery to handle them. Relief And if there was a mess, the voters might not feel friendly to Mr. Truman or h i s congressmen. Now if congress votes stand-by wage and price controls Mr. Tru man can do this: Set up some kind of agency, or skeleton agency, which could get ready to slap on wage and price controls if that becomes necessary, thus giving the government time to prepare against mistakes. Further, since business doesn't like price controls and labor does not like wage controls, neither side can be mad at Mr. Truman if congress all on its own nudged by Baruch insists on giving Mr. Tru man what he didn't ask for. Six Rivers National Forest Fire Battled EUREKA, Calif., (&) More than 500 men were battling wild flames in the Six Rivers national forest today. Willian Fischer, supervisor of the forest, said the chances of soon subduing the fire which al ready blackened 600 acres of tim ber, arc slim. The fire area is just south of the Oregon border and within 25 miles of Crescent City, Calif. The fire started in Siskiyou national forest and was blown into the Six Rivers area by high winds. Fischer said the fire is the fourth major blaze in the Six Rivers forest this year. All are believed to have started by lum bering operations, he added. Canada Preparing For Nationwide Rail Strike MONTREAL (TP) Canada's railway chiefs prepared today for a nationwide rail strike Aug. 22. They asked union leaders to meet with management today to plan maintenance of essential services. Representatives of 15 interna- .tional unions and two Canadian unions rejected the railroad's "final offers" yesterday. Soviet Ruse Seen For Air Blockade Of All Berlin BERLIN (P The commun ist East German ' government asked Russia today to protect the Soviet zone from illeged dropping of incendiary bombs" by U, S. PLANES. This raised the possi bility of a Soviet attempt to block ade American planes from Berlin a step which might touch off the East-West powderkeg here. , The Communist government for warded to Moscow a report by Minister of Interior Stenhoff that incendiaries were loosed on East German farm centers by Amer ican aircraft on two occasions last month. It was ridiculed by American authorities. But Allied officials view ser iously the obvious implications if Moscow undertake! to use the East German complaint for any thing more than propaganda. Ex-WAC Nominated For Sheriff In Idaho IDAHO CITY. Ida.. (AP) A former WAC sergeant won the Boise county Republican nomin ation for sheriff. If elected next fall she will become Idaho's first woman sheriff. Mrs. Harriet (Babe) Hansen, 50, ran up 145 votes in eight of Boise county's 10 precincts to win over Charles Newell of Horseshoe Bend and John W. Rynearson of Idaho Citv. She has served as a guide for big game parties in Idaho's prim itive area for years. She is recog nized as one of the state's best marksmen and has killed 75 cou gars. Mrs. Hansen operates a ranch en the middle fork of the Salmon river. Senate Probers Seek Horse Bookmaker WASHINGTON W The senate crime investigating com mittee is on the trail of a Chicago moved in on the lush Florida gam bling field. The missing vitness is Harry Russell, identified by the commit tee as a Chicago gambling oper ator who became a member of the highly profitable S. and G. horse book syndicate in Miami Brach. Russell's name figured promin ently in testimony at the com mittee's hearing when other mem bookie it suspects may have hers of the syndicate gave their version of how the Chicagoan came in for a one-sixth interest for $20,000.
