The second set, however, was an other story as Garrison and Randall ran up a 5-2 lead, after their competitors had been tied at 2 2. Bruton and Miles then rallied to tie it at 5-5, but the challengers were always able to win the odd game first and finally took two in a row to win 9-7. After the second set it seemed to ba about all Bruton and Miles. The latter began hitting his shots, which he had been missing in the early aames. After being tied at 2-2, the champs went on to take the last two sets rather easily. (Staff Photo) Christian Church Team Victorious The Christian Church men clob bered the First ' Methodists, 13-3, last night in the Twilight league games. The Christian Church men scored in every inning while hold ing the First Methodists to lone runs in the first, third and fourth. The Christian Church men scored in the initial inning on three con secutive walks and a fly to the center fielder, Schweppe. They scored again in the sec ond, two more in the third, three in the fourth, another in the fifth. Their big inning was the sixth, however. They batted around when Marr walked, Boucock followed him with a walk, Miles and Cren shaw singled and Piper walked. They garnered the last In the final inning on Casteel's hit that drove Boucock in. Witten smashed out a home run in the first foi the First Me thodists to even the score but from then on it was the Christian Church men's. The Methodist's got another in the third on two hits by Root and Witten and a single by Coen. They smuggled their last run in the fourth on h i t s by Schweppe and Pattison and a long fly to center by Hoot. Surprisingly, the Church men's pitcher Russcl allowed nine hits while his team was picking up ten, but the Christian church men got them while they counted. A Yankee victory would put Casey Stengel's men back at the top of the American league for the first. time since June 9. Ii was on that day that the Tigers wrested the lead from New York. In The Majors Kell Maintains AL Batting Lead CHICAGO, (JP) -Third base man George Kell of Detroit, the 1949 batting champion, maintained his American league hitting lead during the week with a seven point boost to .351, three ahead of Cleve land's Larry Doby. A week ago Kell hald a mere one point edge over teammate Hoot Evers and Doby. Evers skidded seven points into a thrid-place tie with Boston's Johnny Pesky at .336 Doby upped his mark five points to .348 for sole possession of sec ond place. Other leaders in average com puted through Sunday's games wer Walt Dropo, Boston, .324; Phil Ris suto, New York .321; Johnny Groth, Detroit, .320 and Vic Wcrti, De troit, .313. Kell also continued as a double leader in the specialized bracket with 135 hits and 31 two-baggers. Boston's Vei n Stephen is the only other two-ply leader with 85 runs scored and 100 runs batted in. Al Rosen of Clevland added two homers during the week to increase his top total to 29. New York's Gene Woodling banged five triples in his last eight hits to surge ahead in this production with nine. Stolen base honors wer still held by Boston's Dom DiMaggio with an unchange total of 10. Pee Wee Game Set Saturday Director Norm V est of the Pee Wee program has announced that he has scheduled two seven-inning games against the Basher Bombers of Portland in the 12-14 group and the 12 and under group. The game will be played on Finlay field Saturday night. Last year the RosebUrg Pee' Wees trounced the Portland crew in two games. This will be the final competition for the city Pee Wees. It termin ates a week of intra-squad games ana a jamboree Wednesday night. The final result of the intra- squad games has not been re ceived yet, but should be avail able soon. ' Whether Lindell, the x-New York Yankee, can provide the power punch Hollywood has lacked all season is a matter of conjecture. The 33-year-old outfielder bussed a lot of fences in the majors be fore he lost his touch. Even if he does produce in the Coast league, his appearance may be too late to help. The Twinks trail Oakland by 8V4 games to day, and acquiring Lindell may be tantamount to buying the horse af ter the barn has burned down. Lindell joins the Stars tonight for an eight gtme series with Seat tle. This is the one that can make or break Hollywood or Seattle, also for that matter. The Rainiers gained an even split in their 10-game battle with Oakland by whipping the Oaks. 5 to 1 last night. But it didn't hoist Seattle back into the first division. The Rainiers remain fif th, half a notch behind San Francisco. Lefty Jim Davis displayed win ning form in checking the Acorns. Seattle collected 10 hits, most of them in the first and third inn ings: Oakland has eight. It was the only game of the evening. Holly, wood fared miserably against low ly Portland last week, and tonight the Oaks move into Vaughn street to start an eight game series against the suddenly devastating lleavers. There were no games in the American league yesterday but the National league pitcher changed somewhat when the Bos ton Braves defeated the St. Louis Cardinals, 4-3, and the Chicago Cubs whipped the Brooklyn Dodg ers, 8-5. Walker Cooper's single off Tommy Glaviano's glove in the last of the ninth drove in Earl Torgeson with the run that gave Boston the victory and moved the Braves into second place ptst the Cardinals. The Braves now trail the pace-setting Philadelphia Phils by three games. The Cards are three and a half games behind and the fourth place Dodgers lag by four and a half. Warren Spahn went the route for his 13th victory. He gave up six hits and fanned four to in crease his league leading strike out total to 132. Max Lanier was thi- loser. The Cubs overcame a 5-1 defi cit. They tallied three times in the sixth to kayo starter Dan Bank head. Two straight hits finished Chris Van Cuyk : the seventh. Rex Barney relieved, gave u p three bases on balls and uncorked a wild pitch to set up a four-run inning for Chicago. That was tne game. The Brooklyn hurlers stop ped his consecutive hitting streak at 30 games. Robinson has 124 hits the most in the league in 335 at bats. Mus ial has one less safety, 123, in 341 tries. Enos Slaughter, Musial's team mate, climbed from seventh in third place with his .332 mark. Figures include games of Sunday. July 29. Tues., Aug. 1, 1950 Reedsport Gains Chance For Title; Faces Silverton SILVERTON, UPThe field was down to three teams today in the annual state semi-pro base ball tournament after wins by sil verton and Reedsport. Silverton came from behind to defeat Eugene, 4-2, and reedsport walloped Central Point, 9-3. Both losers dropped from the tourney. Silverton and Reedsport, each defeated once, will clash tonight for the right to meet Archer Blow er and Pipe of Portland for the title tomorrow. Archer is the only unbeaten team left in the tourney. Gene Peterson pitched Silverton to its victory, giving up only two hits. He was in early trouble, though, as Eugene sco.'ed two un earned runs off him in the first inning. In the fifth Silverton rallied for four runs, nicking Eugene hurler Don Reed for five hits. Lefty Don White pitched the Reedsport win, scattering seven hits. The winners put the game pway early, scoring twice in the first inning. Catcher Joe Segura batted in four of the victor' runs with three hits.
