GEORGE AP Newsfeitures Writer WASHINGTON U.S. Marines on their way from the west coast to the battle of Korea will not be the first Leathernecks to fight on Korean soil. Seventy-nine years ago a battalion of Marines, with the support of ships and sailors of the Asiatic fleet, won the two-day battle of the Salee river forts. It was the first time that soldiers of a western power had spent a night on Korean soil. The battle followed the alleged i treacherous firing by Korean sol- i diers on an American party sur veying the river. Asiatic Flet Admiral John J. Rodgers had ob tained permission from Korean authorities to make navigation soundings. For several years prior to the Salee river fracas Koreans repor tedly had mistreated American sail ors and others shipwrecked o n Korean shores. Some Americans were said to have been killed. How Situation Dtvelopod In the spring of 187L the United States Minister to China, Freder ick Low, arranged a conference with Korean authorities looking to the protection of American citi zens. Low enlisted the services of the Asiatic fleet, then in Japanese waters. Low boarded A d m. Rodgers flagship, the Colorado, and the squadron arrived off Salee river anchorage late in May. After an exchange of apparently friendly visits between Koreans and Amer leans, the river surveying expe dition was launched. Marines' 100th Battle The Salee river engagement was the 100th battle in which units of the Marine corps, established in 1775, had participated. The Mar ines' first battle was during a raid on New Providence in the Baha mas on March 2, 1776. The first fighting by U. S. Ma rines in the Far East took place on Sumatra, Feb. 7, 1832. Some 250 Marines and sailors defeated a band of Malay pirates in the Battle of Quallo Batoo. The Leathernecks first fighting in China was at the Battle of Shanghai in April 1854. Americans and British Marines drove off Chinese Imperialist forces which had encroached on the foreign set tlement in Shanghai, In the Spanish-American war the Marine corps had a force of only 75 officers and 2,000 enlisted men. When tht United States en tered World War I the Marines had 511 officers and 13,000 men, but during that war more than 31,000 Marines were sent overseas for service in the A. E. F. When the Nazis overran France in the summer of 1940 the Mar ines had an active force of about 28,000. By the time of the Japan ese attack on Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941, volunteer enlistments had increased Marine strength to 66, 000.
