pards responded with an as.
sortment of capers and catnip-ups
that amazed even Bean. They be
haved like over-grown kittens, and
like cats, they appeared very fond
of the catnip, the well known,
strong-scented herb.
A 160 -pound Indian leopard and
regarded as dangerous, appeared
to be trying to giggle. He sniffed
the herb, rolled on it. and then
staggered around drunkenly with
a spray of catnip draped over one
ear.
Three brother lions acted very
alley cattish. One howled; another
chased his tail; the third rolled on
his back, gazed dreamily at the
ceiling and gurgled.
Two surly bengal tigers attempt
ed tricks after taking a few whiffs
of the catnip. One tried to stand
on his head, right in the catnip.
One leaning groggily in the corn
er, did setting ud exercises. He

Negro Granted

WASHINGTON. UP) -Justice
Burton of the supreme court has
granted a stay ofc execution to
Willie McGee. a Mississippi Nesio
under sentence to be electrocuted
on a charge of raping a white wo
man.
Court attaches said this could
be considered next October. The
high court is now in summer re
cess. McGee, 37, has been convicted
three times on the rape charge.
HONG KONG, P Radio
PeiDincr said rhinpeo I'mnmimi,.
organizations have protested to Pr
siuent iruman against the death
seiuance ot "an innocent Negro
worker" in the U. S. charged with
rape.
The disnairh riiilrihntp1 hv (ha

China Real Loser In
Korea, Journalist Says
PORTLANDiTj-The apparent
loser in Korea is not South Korea
nor yet the United States but Chi
na. So said Fred E. Hamoson. for
mer Pacific Northwest newspaper
man, now Associated Press chief
of bureau in Hong Kong. He is
nome on leave.
Hampson said in an interview
here that the United States ap
parently is mounting its power and
will win in Korea. That will leave
China as the loser, he added.
Why? Because President Truman
ordered the U.S. Navy to protect
Formosa, and that effectively de
nies the Chinese Communists any
cnance ot wiping out the resist
ance government headed by Chiang
hai-sneic.
It could, in fact, lead to a breach
between Red China and Moscdw.

Coal-Steel Pool Planned
By 6 European Countries
PARIS (P Six western Euro
pean countries have nearly com
pleted broad outlines for an inter
national authority to control their
pooled coal and steel production.
Delegates from the six govern
mentsFrance, West Germany, It
aly, the Netherlands, Belgium and
Luxembourg have been meeting
here to work out details of the
pool plan originally proposed bv
French Foreign Minister Robert
Schuman.
An official spokesman said they
have agreed subject to approval
by their governments to set up:
1. A supranational authority to
supervise the merged production.
2. A joint parliament, chosen
by the national assemblies of mem
ber nations, to which the authority
would be responsible.
3. A court of appeals to hear
member protests of authority de
cisions. 4. A committee of ministers to
maintain liaison with member governments.
