Rice usually has obtained the bulk of his pickers from Myrtle Creek, but this year pickers have not responded. He announced that his truck will be in Myrtle Creek each morning at 7 o'clock at the bus terminal. to transport pickers. By Water Corp. v With completion of the sale by Calilornia-Oregon Power company of its water properties to tne Ore gon Water corporation, the lat ter company has opened its offices in Roseburg at 219 No. Main street, downstairs in the Carter building However, to facilitate handling the billing of accounts, Copco win continue to mail out statements tor those accounts due prior to Aug. IS. After that date the Oregon Mater corporation will take over the complete operation, u is an nounced. Walter H. Smith, is the local manager for the Oregon Water corporation. He formerly served here for two and a half years as water superintendent for California Oregon Power company. Smith announced that all opera ting personnel has been retained. Additional help has been neces sary to staff the local office. Tentative sale of Copco's water holdings was announced in June. Completion of the transaction was contingent upon final approval by the public utilities commissioner of Oregon, A hearing was held here the latter part of June. Affected also in the transaction are the Copco holdings at Oakland and at Klamath Falls. A subsidiary of the corporation has also purchased the California Water holdings of Copco at Duns muir and Fort Jones. Land Auction Slated Saturday The first real estate auction of its kind to be held in this vicinity is scheduled in Roseburg Saturday at 2 p.m. Sixteen view lots in the Glen Oaks subdivision are being offered by Harry D. Kinnear. owner. The auction will be conducted by Jo seph Hyman. Portland auctioneer, who has had 25 years' experience in this field in the East and Middle west. He has been employed by C. S. Bricc's & Co. to make the sale. It will be conducted in cooper ation with members of the Douglas County Reality board. Glen Oaks subdivision lies six blocks east of the Indian theater on Lane street. Signs there will direct those interested to the prop erty. Inspections may be made in advance, it is announced. The area has been platted, and 1720 feet of sewer lines are laid. Streets are graded, base rock is in and the streets are being given a finished rock coating. Owner Of Roaming Dog Prefers Jail To Fine DETROIT, July 28 UP) Mrs. Mabel Cote chooses a ten-day jail term before she'll pay a $50 fine for letting her dog run at large. It's a matter of principle with her. "Bootsie wasn't really bad,' she said in accepting sentence. Neighbors complained that Boot sie, a mongrel, nipped their children. U.S. Air Force Power Increase Scheduled WASHINGTON, -UP) The air force is increasing its strength from 48 groups to 58 within 12 months and to 69 groups by Jan uary, 1953, Rep. Vinson (D-Ga) announced. The air force is begining im mediately to step up officers and men to a target of 548,311. This is an increase of 136,311 over its strength on June 30, said Vin son, the chairman of the House Armed Forces committee. The increase in group and per sonnel strength is made possible through the air force's allotment of $4,535,500,000 of. President Tru man's emergency additional budget request of $10,500,000,000. Federal Court Terms At Salem Authorized WASHINGTON. -(IF) Leoisls- tion to authorize federal court terms in Salem. Ore., was passed todav by the house and sent to the Presi dent. The court now sits in Medford. Klamath Falls, Pendleton, Port land and fcugene. The House also passed and sent to the Senate a bill to remove a provision that terms of the court may be held in Klamath Falls only if quarters are furnished with out cost. Fire Razes Warehouse Of Eugene Business Firm EUGENE () An early morn ing fire completely destroyed the Alaska Junk and Machinery com pany wareouse causing damage va vanouslv estimated at from $25,000 to $40,000. Oak St. Phone 348 Seine-Net Fishermen Operate During Law Tilt ASTORIA, Ore. tJPi Seine-net fishermen operated on the Colum bia river again today after asking a new hearing on a law to ban them. Through legal battles they have continued to operate in the two years since Oregon voters passed a law to keep seiners off the riv er. The state supreme court up held the law three weeks ago. The new appeal enables them to fish while legal arguments proceed. Mountain States Co. President Resigns ALABANY, Ore., (JP) Z. E. Merrill, president of Mountain States Power Company since 1937, announced his resignation. He will be succeeded Aug. 1 by A. W. Trimble, Vice president and treasurer since 1942. Merrill said health forced him to give up the office. He added that he would remain with the com pany as chairman of the board. New Wildlife Head Is Assigned To Northwest PORTLAND, -(P) The forest service has named a new chief of wildlife management for the Pacific Northwest region. . He is William Huber, a forester at Philadelphia. He is expected to take over here Aug. 1. He succeeds Glenn Mitchell, who retired and is now working for the Washington state game department Woman Killed By Train As She Flees Stalled Auto GARY, Ind., UP) Four persons' scrambled from a stalled automo bile on a rilroad crossing near here last night, but one, a woman, was so scared she ran down the track into an oncoming electric train and was killed. She was Mrs. Fannie Zussin, 59. of Chicago. Her husband, Victor Zussin, also 59, suffered a broken leg in his jump from the car. The other two escaped unhurt. Pendleton Fixes Rules For Garbage Disposal PENDLETON, -UP) Garbage ! collection is compulsory in Pen dleton now through an ordinance I passed by the city council to rcg I ulate sanitation. I The city was divided into two zones. Garbage collection licenses I were issued to only two outfits one to a zone. All other licenses were revoked.
