Official Accused Of Being Red Is Named By Morse WASHINGTON, July 27 -UP Senator Morse (R-Ore) Tuesday told, the Senate that Edward G, Posniak is the "important state department official accused by Sen ator McCarthy (R-Wis) of being a Communist. Morse disclosed the man's iden tity in the Senate a few minutes after Senator McMahon (D-Conn) had read an affidavit signed by Morse attesting to Posniaks loy alty. McCarthy had told the Senate earlier he had air-tight proof that an important state department of ficial whom he referred to as "Mr. X is a Communist. McCarthy said the proof was con tained in the State department's own loyalty file on the man. The Wisconsin senator produced a pur ported copy of the file. He said his evidence was furnished by "an FBI acorn, an undercover naenl. (who) joined the Communist parly In 1937 at the suggestion of the FBI. Morse told the Senate he sinned the affidavit attesting to Posnlak'a loyalty back in 193B when Morse was an assistant to the attorney general Posniak, Morse said, worked for him in the Justice department at that time. Posniak, informed of the develop ments in the Senate, told a reporter: "I have no comment at this time. I will have a statement to make later, you can be sure of that. . . Posniak is listed in the State de partments register as 39 years of age and a native of Moscow who I was naturalized in 1939. He entered the department as an economist ' served in the Justice department, His present classification is . of statcgic services and the army. Oct. 10, 1945.
