14 The Newt-Review, Rosoburg, Or Wed., July 26, 1850jpafo Acted On North Korean Armies Display Evidence Of Expert Training By PHILIP POTTER Baltimore Sun Papers War Correspondent TOKYO, UP) Those who felt the United Statei was taking on a bush league toe out here have learned differently. The professional competence of the little brown-clad Orientals leads one to suspect that their military training long antedated the estab lishment of the people's democratic republic of Korea, under whose flag they fight. Their familiarity with tank war fare indicates that some might have been around in Russian uni forms at the battle of Stalingrad. In any case, the green American doughboys who were thrown in against the Communist invaders have had a bloody and sweaty time of it. They have been in tears, too the tears of strong men whose best is not quite good enough. The North Koreans have had too heavy a punch for the lightweight battalions which we have commit ted one at a time in an operation which one soldier described as "throwing in flyweights against a Joe Louis one at a time." The gaunt and bearded faces of the men who have faced North Korean tanks and infantry for three crucial weeks are those of men who have been in a war. The shock of defeat is registered in their faces. Expressions of optimism heard hero don't jibe with the picture one sees in the battle area and along the supply lines. Flank Protection Weak One of the major weaknesses of our position from the start has been the lack of flank protection from the battalions facing the main Communist forces. This has made possible the Com munist tactics of infiltration which have turned one of our positions after another and forced our con tinued retreat. Some observers see withdrawal to a beachhead, where we would have a continuous line of Ameri can troops in some depth, as the best we can hope for now. There Is confidence that an im penetrable perimeter could be es tablished which would gain the timo needed for American indus trial might to produce the needed war material and to train the men to use it. In Washington, military spokes men at the Pentagon said that ob viously the North Korean armies were well trained, but that there is no way to determine now whether any of the Red Korean units saw World War II service in Europe. Other officers explained that many Koreans were used by the Japanese army and that a con siderable portion of the country's manpower had some military training before the Japanese sur render in 1943. Korea Test Four Years In Making, Adm. Nimitz Says SEATTLE ) Invading North Korean forces must be pushed back to the 38th parallel and more, Ad miral Chester W. Nimitz says. Nimitz, who commanded the Pa cific fleet during World War II and served as chief of naval op erations after the war, is enroute to Lake Success to confer with U. N. officials on the Korean crisis. "From a military standpoint it is difficult to see how the Korean crisis can be settled by pushing the invaders back only to their boun daries," he said. "More must be done." The five-star admiral, who has been working for the United Na tions for the past 14 months, also declared he did not think tne Ko rean fight would lead to a third World War, if U. N. forces are victorious. "But if we are not successful, it will be an invitation to similar ag gression in other parts of the world," he said. "I consider Korea a test which has been four years in the making." The 65-year-old admiral also said he believes United States recogni tion of the Communist government of China is inevitable for the pur pose of mutually beneficial trade By Planning Board Cecil Hugh and R. H. Savage, new members of the Roseburg Planning commission, were pres ent for the commission's meeting Monday night. The principal busi ness cf the meeting included a discussion and action on plats. Jim Daugherty,. civil engineer, was present and asked for reloca tion of a portion of county road 5U, along the base of Ml. Nebo, adjoining the Lindsey section. Lindsey has offered to dedicate 10 feet along the north side for a 50-foot street width, but the com mission held the matter in abey ance to study the possibility of a 60-foot road. The county court will be contacted for a recommendation in writing as to the desired width. Hillside Gardens, located at Kel ley's Corners and owned by Henry J. Chandler, was given final ap proval, contingent upon the grant in 2 of a 60-foot access roadway along the westerly end of the plat running in a north-south direction,, to premit adjoining property own- relations. "After the insults in the use and seizure of American property, we can't recognize the Communist re gime right away," he said. "But I am convinced that the insulting and other incidents were inspired by a third party which wants to keep China and the Unit ed States apart." Macomber Indicttd By Grand Jury At Medferd MEDFORD, July 28 UP) Ger ald Macomber, 27, was held here for the grand jury on three charges of assault with intent to kill. Arraigned Saturday, Macomber, captured July )3 after being wounded in a gunfight with state and local police, waived prelimi nary hearing. He was sought in connection with a series of burglaries in the Al bany area, where he once eluded a massed police searching party. ers a permanent access road. River Bend Acres, plat A, on the Fisher road, owned by George C. Blanck, was given final approv al. Tentative approval was given A. Woodruff's sub-division. Final approval was withheld subject to Woodruff presenting a detailed sketch of proposed future develop ment of his remaining adjoining property. A committee, Hugh, Savage and Ben Irving, was appointed to study the possibility of obtaining an aeri al map of the area within the commission's jurisdiction. The secretary was instructed to write the district attorney, to learn if any action has been taken rela tive to investigation of persons who have been plating and disposing of property of more than four lots, merely by metes and bounds de scription, and without approval by the planning commission. Consid erable discussion was held on the matter. MERCHANDISE PRIZE SHOOT Sunday, July 30 7 - 10 P. M. YONCALLA TRAP & RIFLE CLUB Va Mile North of Yonealla on Highway 99 There's no better bourbon !
