8 Tht Newi-Review, Roteburg, Ore. Fri., July 11. 1950 Reduced Standards Fixed For Draftees; They Must Have At Least Sixteen Good Teeth By VERN HAUGLAND WASHINGTON UP The army' forthcoming drafteei must have better teeth than was required for World War II duty, but they need not be quite so stable emotionally. And in the event of a war a general reduction in standards for military service is in prospect, so that many men who once might have been rated 4-F may shoulder arms. ' Furthermore, plans are under way to see that, in such an emer gency, 4-Fs are tunneled into suit able essential jobs in which they might be needed. These were developments as draft boards over the natjon began filling the army's demand for 20, 000 replacements by Sept. 30. The draftees will take the place of men being sent overseas because of the Korean crisis. There may be another draft call next month, selective service Di rector Lewis B. Hershey said yes terday. He added: "And if things continue to grow worse, it may be necessary to tighten the law concerning exemp tions of veterans and the regula tions concerning dependents." Shoitage of Dentists Felt An army spokesman said thut men now being drafted must have at least 16 teeth "in proper posi tion" in order to be accepted. During World War II men were admitted no matter how bad their teeth. The higher qualification, the spokesman said, is due to a short age of dentists in the army and the inability of the defense depart ment to provide unlimited upper and lower plates. On the other hand, the army has reduced its standards to admit "mild" neuropsychiatric cases. During the war no known psycho neurotics were admitted. The spokesman said men afflict ed with nervousness or agitation now may be admitted for service in the zone of the interior. "We found during the war that many men rejected for mild psy choneurosis could have been used satisfactorily," he explained. The defense department's per sonnel policy board is surveying 10.000 military jobs, to classify those which can be filled by men' witn delects which in the past ranked them as 4-F. ' The navy said it has eased cer tain strict postwar requirements as to eyesight, color perception and the like, and has returned largely to World War II standards. It has dropped Its World War II require ment that a draftee be physically capable of performing any navy duty. The air force has not changed its requirements. "We never have resorted to the draft and we arcnt d'afting anyone now," a spokes man said. TRUCKER KILLED COTTAGE GROVE, July 21 (B Robert Stanley Campbell. 20. of Cottage Grove, was killed Wed nesday wnen his truck collided with another on the Black Butte high way two miles south of here. Both trucks were hauling logs. Stomach Cancer Increasing, Says Medical Teacher LOS ANGELES, July 21-tP) cancer of the stomach is increas ing in the United States because people are living longer, Dr. Claude E. Welch of Harvard university medical school told a cancer sym posium conducted by UCLA. "Radical surgery is saving more lives and, where operations arc performed before the disease has involved other organs, over half the victims of stomach cancer are alive at least five years after the surgery," Dr. Welch said. He said that as many middle aged persons are killed by cancer of the stomach as by traffic acci dents. "There is some reason to suspect that cancer of the stomach is sometimes caused by eating too hot and too irritating foods. Indi cations are that high incidence of stomach cancer in parts of India result from eating hot and highly spiced curry." Japanese men have more sto macn cancer than their wives, too. Why? Research indicates that it may be due to the fact that the men, who are served first, get their food piping hot while the wo men get what's left over and cold. Proposed French Ban On Coca Cola Knotty Problem PARIS, (F) A parliamentary committee has decided it would be a good idea to make Frenchmen quit drinking Coca Cola, but can't j figure out how to do it. Coca Cola is now made in wine-1 producing France. Hiking the tarifl : on imports wouldn't affect sales j The health ministry has refused to ban the drink. The national assembly's commit-1 tee on beverage has adopted unan imously a resolution introduced by Fernand Chevalier, a moderate deputy from wine-growing Alger ia. It asks the government to "take immediately necessary measures with regard to Coca Cola and simi lar beverages to insure the pro tection and safeguarding of inter ests of agriculture, processing in dustries and the national economy in general." Just what the committee wants the government to do was not made clear. ' Chevalier's resolution was voted instead of a Communist proposal for prohibition of Coca Cola. Pre vious Communist attempts to ban the beverage also have failed. Harry Bridges' Local Backs U.S. In War In Korea SAN FRANCISCO P) Harry Bridges' own local of his CIO In ternational Longshoremen's union (ILWU) has overwhelmingly pass ed a resolution endorsing the Unit ed States action in Korea. Neither Bridges nor any repre sentative of his left wing faction offered any opposition. Bridges, however, read a statement saying his previous stand had been mis interpreted. Discussion of the resolution at K reviews meetings of the big local ad resulted ih violent opposition from left wingers, a near riot and the calling of police cars. Bridges said last night he was opposed to anything which might lead to World War III, and that he favored adjudication of the Kor ean issues by the United Nations. The meeting hotly debated a pro posal by the Union's walking boss es that Bridges either resign his presidency of the ILWU or his lead ership of the left wing maritime federation of the world. Union sources said that when a voice vote was taken on the re signation demand, President Phil Sandin first announced it had car ried. These sources added it later was decided to submit the issue to a referendum in August, after the Bridges group protested the announced result and suggested the latter course.
