As chief of operations, Springer said he was able to travel extensively throughout Europe, in c 1 u d i n g many countries behind the "iron curtain," in an effort to locate the 14.000 soldiers listed as miss ing dead. He said every mode of convey ance was used in locating and transporting bodies of American soldiers, sailors and airmen 1 n some cases sleds and horses were used, in others, the program i n volved such engineering feats as raising ships from the ocean and lakes. All but 2,800 war dead were recovered and many of those re maining in Europe are buried in cemeteries located in lands now under Russian domination. Sprin ger said. Marshall Plan Lauded Commenting upon the success of the Marshall plan, Springer spoke of the "grandiose and spectacular Berlin air lift," which he said played a large part in saving that city from destruction through star vation. He said the primary pur pose of the Marshall plan is to combat Communism by combatt ing adversity. He said inhabitants of countries who find themselves aided by goods instead of promises soon lose interest in Communism. This he said, is the case in France and Italy where Communism has lost considerable strength, largely because of the success of the Mar shall plan. Springer declared that most of Europe has recovered from World War II to a great extent, with the exception of England and Spain. Speaking briefly on the recent "fall" of the French government, Springer said that situation app eared to be periodic because of the nature of France's coalition gov ernment. He said the falls the French government take should cause no alarm, that the various french ministers and department chiefs are "merely rotating jobs." The meeting was presided over by Walter S. Mallory, serving his first full meeting as new president of the Roseburg Rotary club. A spokesman at the Quilcene ranger station identified the dead pilot as Ernest Pickering. His com panion and cargo dropper, Harry I.yle, suffered a broken ' shoulder. Both men were Ii Wi Issaquah. Tax Limit Excess Loses By Margin Of One Vote LAKE VIEW, July 7 UP) Lakeview, which has never exceed ed the 6 percent tax limitation, kept its record intact todav. Voters in a special election de feated, 54 to 53, a proposal to add $14,000 to the city budget, exceed ing tne constitutional tax limit. The city council had proposed the ex tra runds to hire additonal police, traf undstohrea dditional police, contribute toward a county li bray fund and to pay for a street grader. Lone Bandit Gets $5,548 In Idaho Bank Holdup TROY, Idaho, July T -UP) A young bandit, his eyes hidden by sun glasses, ignored a faint ing woman teller yesterday and escaped from the First Bank of Troy after taking a bundle of mon ey, containing $5,548, pushed at him by a bank official. Frank Brocke, ba:ik vice presi dent, said the bandit stuffed the money in a black lunch pail' and walked calmly out tha front door. Detroit Crackdown On Speeders Paying Off DETROIT, July 7 (IP) If fig ures count for anything, Detroit's crackdown on speeding drivers is paying off. In 60 days of a "get tough" policy 590 persons have been sent to jail. Over the same period 23 persons were killed in traffic as compared to 34 for the previous 60 days. "It looks good to me." said traf fic Judge John D. Watts. "But give us another six months and we'll really show some results." Judge Carl E. Wimberly Thurs day awarded judgment for $541 plus costs to the plaintiff R. 0. Johnson in a circuit court action. Named as defendants in the case were E. G. Lewis and R. H. Ell ison. M. A. Kusler was granted judg ment for $404.27, plus interest, at torney fees and costs, in his suit naming John C. Taylor as defend ant. Both judgments were awarded on default when the defendants failed to appear in court. Lt. Col. Bell And Wife Return To Virginia Lt. Col and Mrs. Maynard Bell left by plane from Portland Mon day for their home in Falls Church, Va., near Washington, D, C, Lt. Col. and Mrs. Bell have been spending a month's leave visiting with relatives and friends in Rose burg and Canyonville. Mrs. Bell, the former Evolyn Willis, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Willis of Canyonville. Col. Bell, the son of W. D. Bell of Roseburg. was formerly an employee of the News Review. He is presently employed with headquarters. U. S. air force. at the Pentagon. He is chief of the advertising and publicity branch, personnel procurement di vision for the air force. Mrs. Bell will continue her ad vanced piano studies under James M. Hoffenstein of Washington and New York.
