The curtain is falling on a lively first half, an even better one that many observers had predicted. The new uncertainty comes when observers were sharply divided as to what role would be played by the second half, waiting in the wings. Almost all of the business indi cators are rising or still high. But a few signs of a slowdown are now reported. A washing machine factory lays off its second shift as sales drop. Television set sales go into the expected summer slump. Farm income is running behind last year, although prices have been rising in recent weeks. But most of today's news points i the other way. Employment is up, and basic industries are booming. Soft good industries are stirring. The war scare will have to get more tangible to affect most of these right away. A warming up of the cold war usually stimulates some part of industry. Congress loosens up tne purse strings tor defense or foreign aid. Consumers buy goods they fear may go out 1 of production. Developments Listed Here are some of the things just reported on the general state of business, and some on specific in I dustries: ! Mills, factories and mines em ployed 11.8 million persons in May, a gain of 320,000 in a month, and nearly a half million above the year before. It brought total non farming employment to 43 million, a gain of Vi million since Feb ruary. Weekly earnings in manufactur ing plants rose for the sixth straight month to another all-time high of $57.50, making consumer purchasing power higher then ever. Steel production continues at record levels. Car and truck pro duction set a new high last week for the third week in a row. CITY BUDGET TRIMMED CENTRAL POINT-OS5)-The city council has trimmed its budget; which is what the voters wanted all along. The total proposed expense out lay came to $4,500 more than al lowed under the legal 6 percent limitation. The council called for a vote, and the voters said "No." The council called another elec tion. Again the voters balked. The biggest cuts will be made in the city park and emergency funds. with the amount of goods being packaged and shipped rose to 103.7 percent of rated capacity from 102 percent the week before, and I compared with 78.1 percent a year ago. Lumbermen report shipments were 69 percent above produc tion and their backlog of orders amounting to 58 percent of mill stocks. Furniture makers booked 24 per cen more orders in May than in April, and 54 percent more than a year ago although May is us ually a slow month. Clothing makers are feeling bet ter, too. Shoemakers say production so far this year is topping 1949 by 2.3 percent. Against all this good news it's sad to have to add: The cost of living has taken its sharpest spurt in nearly two years. The bureau of labor statistics re ports its index up 8 10th of a per cent in May. Food prices were up 1.9 percent, with meat the main culprit, up seven percent. WELL DRILLING 6" ond 8" holes.
