Society and GUU By LOTUS KNICHT PORTER and BETTY ALLEN IO0KING6LASS WSCS PLANS COUNTRY STORE The Woman'i Society of Christ ian Service was entertained Wed nesday afternoon by Mrs. Maxine Ellis at her home at Lookingglass. The devotional service was let by Nrs. Arthur Marsh and the busi nest session conducted by M r s. Corvin Heard. Mrs.Ma this was named to prepare and serve the coffee and Mrs. Homer Elliott will supervise the making and sale of ice cream. Mrs. Gate man urged all of the society mem bers to be alert and faithful in soliciting goods for the store that the various "departments" may be well stocked. Mrs. Cliff Harner, chairman of flie handwork committee, reported the gift of "Dresden plate" quilt blocks ready to be set together. The blocks were pieced and pre sented by Mrs. A. A. Jacoby and it is planned that the finished quilt will be on sale at the "Country Store". Anyone skilled in quilting was asked to contact Mrs. Harner. Mrs. Esther Harbaugh sent in t report that program calendars for the ensuing year had been ordered and would be ready for distribu tion at the next meeting. The hostess was assisted by sev eral of the young matrons in serv ing refreshments. In attendance at the meeting were Mrs. Ivan Swift, Mrs. I. B. Behnken, president of the Synod, declared the or ganization will renew its attempts to encourage "free' conferences among clergy and laity of all Lutheran bodies in the nation to discuss unity. A doctrinal agreement with the American Lutheran church will be submitted to the delegates for rati fication during the -nine-day ses sion. It would not amount to a merger, officials said, because each group would retain its ad ministrative setup. The brain is smaller than similar ones but is rated the world's fast est automatic computer. Dr. Edward U. Condon, director of the Bureau of Standards, said the machine marks the start of a new era. He said the era will be marked by rapid and large-scale development of "machines which relieve men's minds of many rou tine and fatiguing chores in the same way that the machines of the past have relieved our muscles of routine and fatiguing chores." Main St. Ground Floor Next to The News-Review Beaver Boys State Scheduled At Corvallis OREGON STATE COLLEGE The 14th annual American Legion sponsored Beaver Boys State will bring some 250 boys to the campus here for a week-long session June 25 to July 1. The affair provides practical training for selected boys, 15 to 17 years of age, from all part of the state. They receive instruction in the operation of government. The 1950 session will be directed by the Rev. James L. Wilson, To ledo, with L. E, Darlington, assist ant dean of men here, acting as liaison officer for the advisory com mittee.
