The second Russian protest made clear that the Soviets believed the Americans are spying along the frontier under the guise ot seeking oil fur the Iranian government. (A similar Russian accusation made public on May-15 was den ied in both Tehran and Washing ton. A state department spokesman then termed the Russian charges '"utter and complete nonsense." Iran, replying to the note from Moscow, said "no activities are- being carried out on the northern areas or anywhere else in Iran contrary to good neighborly rela tions.") It is his first try at politics. lie said his purpose in discussing the wake campaign was "to point out what happened before," and to warn that "unless we are care ful, it might happen again." Wake island was attacked by the Japanese only a few hours after the Pearl Harbor attack on Dec. 8, 1941 (Wake island time). The S18 Marine and naval officers and men held out until Dec. 23, 1941. Devereux was interned through out the war. After his release, he retired from the service and now lives on a large farm not far from Baltimore.
