Newspaper Page TextGOIN' HOME Armed Heads For Retirement In Calumet Farm Blue Grass NEW YORK, June 20 - UP) Armed today was heading back to the lush blue grass of Calumet I farm in Lexington, Ky., where be started out as an ugly duckling. But the retired old man of the turf always will be remembered as the golden seldinc. The gallant galloper ended his story-book career as the third greatest money winner of all time with $817,475. Citation tops the money winners, with Stymie sec ond. Armed won more than half his 81 races 41. He was second 20 times and had 10 thirds. Only 10 times was he worse than third. He's nine years old now and has raced seven years. The veteran built up a popularity seldom, if ever, equalled. He's the champion money earner of all the geldings in turf history. He has been since he won the su burban handicap at Belmonst park on Memorial day of 1946. That was the day he overtook the great oldtimer, Exterminator, who finish ed first in half of his- 100 starts and earned $252,996. This year, Armed raced six times, getting two wins and three sec onds. Floyd, the winning pitcher, gave up six hits, issued one base on balls, hit one batter with a pitched ball and struck out four. Jim Calderwood, hurling for Mc Kenzie Bridge, allowed 13 hits, walked one batter, hit one batter with a pitched ball and struck out three. Oakland led throughout the ball gam;. UP) While other leaders hit the skids, thud sacker George Kell of Detroit, de fending champion, upped his Am erican league batting mark three points during the week to .384 to take an 18 point lead over Bos ton's Walt Dropo. Dropo retained second place al though slumping from .379 to .366. Detroit's Hoot Evers remained in third with .359, a drop of four. Lar ry Doby of Cleveland continued fourth with a seven point cut to .355. Other leaders in average com puted through Sunday's games were four Boston sluggers, Al Za rilla with .337; Johnny Pesky, 329. Dom DiMaggio .325 and Ted Wil liams .323; and two of Detroit, Johnny Lipon and Johnny Groth with .320 apiece. Williams headed two specialized divisions and shared another. He had the most runs, 57; most home runs, 20, and was tied in runs-batted-in with teammate Vern Stephens with 65. Kell added nine hits for a lead- ine total of 84 and also was tops in two-baggers with 19. Philadel phia's Bob Dillinger had the most triples with nine and shared stolen base honors with Doby, each with five thefts. New York's Tommy Byrne con tinued with the top pitching record with 8-1 for .889, while another Yankee hurler, Allie Reynolds, boosted his leading strikeout mark to 69. Independence Shooter Wins State Handicap PORTLAND. June 20 UP) Boh HLff, a dark horse from Independ ence, won the Oregon state handi-1 cap in the state trapshoot Sunday by Breaking 98 out ot iuu targets. Dick Skeeters, Medford, nabbed the all-around championship by shooting 198 in the singles, 96 in the doubles, and 84 in the handicap The day before he had won the dou bles with 96x100. Cal Ray, Eugene, ranked second in the all-around, with scores of 196, 93, and 86, with C. L. Kendall, Oregon City, third, with 193, 98, and 93. Actually Arnold Riegger of Seattle placed first for the all around title, but could not qualify because of his out-of-state resi dence. Helen Watkins, Wasco, and Cor inne Blake, Portland, tied for the women's handicap title with 88 each. Three-Man Race In NL Batting NEW YORK. June 20 UP) The National league batting race is turning out to be a replica of last year's three-man battle among Brooklyn s jacxie itomnson and M. Louis' Stan Musial and Enos Slaughter. The only difference is that the Dodgers' Duke Snider has horned in. Through games of Sunday, June 18, only 21 points separated Ihe quartet. Musial, in front practically from the start of the campaign, still led the pack, but hts once huge margin has shrunk to a mere dozen points. Stan dropped 20 points during the week as his average shrank to .364. That was 12 points better than Robinson's .352. Last year's batting king owns a six-point bulge over Snider for the runnerup spot with Slaughter a close fourth via a .343 mark. Less than a half dozen points separated Robinson, Musial and Slaughter last year as the trio finished in that order. Fifth spot belongs to the surpris ing Eddie Stanky. The New York Giants' scrappy infielder is tied with Chicago's Andy Pafko at .333. Johnny Hopp, a hot hitter early in the campaign, dropped to seventh with .331. He was followed by New York's Whitey Lockman, .329: Philadelphia's Dick Sisler. .328; and Cincinnati's Johnny Wyro- stek, .322. BaumHolrx Still Leads Pacific Coast Hitters SAN FRANCISCO, June 20-UP) Los Angeles outfielder Frank Baumholtz, playing with a second division club, continued to lead regulars in the Pacific Coast league batting race today with an aver age of .404. He had cracked out 101 hits in 250 plate appearances in 65 games, including those of June 17. Ed Barr, Portland outfielder who has been used chiefly as a pinch hitter, topped the batting list with eight blows in 19 trips for an average of .421. Les Fleming, San Francisco, led in runs batted in with 75 and Joe Brovia, Portland, topped the home run hitters with 17. Sutherlin now has Iwo wins and no defeats in league play. Sutherlin will play Myrtle Creak at Sutherlin Saturday, June 24, at 2:30 p.m. , In the nine-inning Drain con test, Beamer allowed three hits hits and walked one man while striking out 14. Drain's pitcher, Don Joslyn, allowed eight hits, walked one, and struck out seven. Nubs Beamer got triple off Joslyn in the sixth, and Dale Robert son, Sutherlin shortstop, hit a home run inside the park in the seventh. Salmon Counts Less This Year The State Game commission's Winchester dam counting station counted 1514 adult Chinook salmon through a period from Jan 1, to June 15, 1950. The counting station also reported spotting 213 jack chi nooks and 131 summer steelhead during the same period. The station officials said the sum mer steelhead "run" arbitrarily starts on June 1 but actually quite a few bright, summer fish were present in May. They reported the degree of overlapping with the win ter run varies considerably from year to year. The highest count of adult chi nooks in the past four years was reported in 1947 when 2477 of the fish were counted at the station. J., completed a record-busting cross-country bicycle ride, pedalling the 3,149.8 miles from New York City to San Fran cisco in 27 days, 11 hours, an av erage of almost 115 miles a day. Bryan arrived at San Francisco's city hall on May 24, 1940. The east-west mark remains unchal lenged on the books of the Ama teur Bicycle League of America. The Jamestown Post-Journal says the 31-year-old former Marine corps captain is pulling out of the Senators because of differences with Clark Griffith, head of the American league club for 30 years. According to the newspaper, H. Gabriel Mutphy. a Washington in surance man, either is handling the deal or is buying the interest himself.
