Firefly Light' Being Studied OAK RIDGE, Tcnn.-f.-D-Firc-flies have gone high-brow in this super-duper scientific city of the atom. bomb. They've taken up science. Or rather science has taken them up. Dr. Hernard Strehler wants to know how a glow worm makes itself glow. Not for just idle cur iosity. The former Johns Hopkins university scientist thinks that a by-product of lucifcrin the sub stance that produces the glow might bring about a better electric light bulb. The trick is to find out how the lightning bugs make the stuff. So he called on the kids around here io bring him all the lightning bugs they could find; he'd pay 25 cents a hundred. In one day the youngsters turned up with more than $15 worth at current prices on the Oak Ridge market. About 6.100 fireflies, by Dr. Strehler'f count. The ship transfer will be ef fected under the mutual defense assistance program. The navy designates the vessels as landing ship, support large In addition, two shipments of carrier type fighter and bomber planes have been ferried to France aboard the French aircraft car rier Dixmude. The first two navy shins to be transferred, the escort vessels 3ur rows and Rinehart, were delivered to the Netherlands at Boston June 1. Ten other escort vessels and two submarines are in process of be ing overhauled prior to transfer. The six landing ships, which cary navy numbers 2, 4, 9, 10, 28 and 80, but no names, recently were moved from the navy's Col umbia river reserve group at Port land to the Bremerton yard. Their overhaul will require about eight weeks. Formerly des ignated as LCI's (landing craft infantry) the ships originally were designed to carry 200 more in fantrymen from transports well offshore or from advance bases. They are equipped with ramps which lower from catwalks for ward when the vessels are beached. They displace 250 tons each and are normally manned by five officers and 65 men. But he needs 100,000 live tiremos for the project. For the kids around here that means that the hunt's still on. Two brothers brought in 400 lightning bugs and collected a dollar for their trouble. And they came up with a neat turn in fire- fly-hunting technique. proudly explained jonn van Fleet and his brother, David: "We got up early and found them asleep on daisies." fine Oregon Douglas fir fine lumber and plywood mills fine Plywood mills at Eugene ond Willamina; lumber mill of Roseburg; logging camp on tittle River. They said these steps are accom panied by mounting hysteria over espionage which is sweeping hun dreds ot Hungarians lrom all walks of life into jails each week as spy suspects. The informants gave this pic ture: Two electric firms were ordered to mass produce a "DeoDle's radio" capable of picking up only Buda pest and Moscow stations. This is aimed at slashing the effectiveness of Voice of America and BBC Hun garian language broadcasts. One of the firm is Standard Elec tric, former subsidiary of the American-owned International Tele phone and Telegraph company.
