Mel Venter, emcee of the Don Lee net'i "Tello-Test" nd "Breakfast Gang" series, reveals that his introduction into radio was strange, indeed. When just a lad of 15, Mel ran into a budding young inventor by the name of Tom Oates in bis home town of Sacramento. Oates' greatest ambition was to become a radio announcer, and so he talked Mel into helping him build a radio station in the basement of the Venter home. The station built, the ingenious pair set the wave length between two major San Francuco outlets in order to steal listening audiences from both. Dedications to high school pals won a great student following, while the rest of the town was up in arms over the mystery station which was interfering with their favorite programs. One afternoon when operating the station all alone, Mel answered the basement door. He opened to a formidable gent, and at the curb was a car with an aerial and a radio blaring out the record Venter was cur rently airing. The visitor proved to be from the FCC. He immediately assigned the pair a new broadcast setup no watts at no kilocycles! School Boy Safety Patrol Is Feted Fifth members of the Roseburg School Boy Safety patrol were feted Wednesday night at the annual par ty and hot dog feed given by '.he Roseburg Lions club, sponsors of the school "traffic cops." Held at the Kolletta skating rink, the party featurd two hours of roller skating, presentation of cita tions of merit and refreshments. Lions club committee members, headed by Chairman O. C. "Tiny" Rolfsness and members James Daugherty and Phil Harlh, partici pated in the evening's activities. Police Chief Calvin H. Baird com plimented the boys for completing another school year free of traffic accidents for their schoolmate charges. Safety patrol members stand guard over their fellow stu dents while crossing intersections near all of the city s schools. Their distinctive yellow uniforms are fur nished by the local Lions club. Roseburg Choral society holds its concert tonight, beginning ' at 8:15, at th Junior high school auditorium. Director Chuck Ricketts has instructed the group in selections ranging from Bach to boogit for the performance. Admission for adults Is 75c; school children, 35c. Miller has filed a suit in circuit court against the Oregon Industrial accident commission, demanding an adjustment on a isability claim. In March of 1950. the d aintiff alleges he sustained an injury to his right great toe while changing cutter blade on a road erader. Miller charges in his comnlaint that the accident resulted in the mputation of the injured toe on March 30, 1950. The plaintiff states after filing a claim with the defendant com mis- ion, his claim was rejected on May 1, because "condition requir ing treatment was not result of trauma alleged." Plaintiff demands condensation of 34 days while off work as a result of the alleged injury and permanent partial disability equal to the 100 percent loss of his toe.
