WOMEN'S SOCIETY HOLDS MEETING THURSDAY AT HOME OP MRS. HILL The Women's Society of Chris tian Service members were enter tained at the home of Mrs. Alice Hill In Winston Thursday, May 18, with a one o'clock potluck lunch eon. Following the social hour the business session was opened by the president, Mrs. Mercy Buell. The devotionals were led by Mrs. Nina Coon, a special guest, recently re turned from a six months stay in California. Plans were completed for the cooked food sole which was held Fridav, election day, Mrs. Mabel Shocklcy and Mrs. Stella Finnell were in charge. Thurs., June 1, 1950 MAYPOLE THEME USED IN DECORATIONS BY SUTHERLIN CHURCH GROUP Mrs. Bertha Sanders and Mrs. Effie Dickens, were hostesses for the Christian Women's Fellowship at (he Sulherlin Christian church. Friday. Dinner was served at tables decorated in the Maypole motif with a large basket of flow ers and miniature maypoles at either end. Mrs. Lloyd Whitford was sur prised at the close of the dinner, when she was presented with a birthday cake, with lighted cand les. She was also showered with many birthday gifts. After the gifts were opened the business meeting was called to order by the president. Roll call was answered with Scripture verses. Mrs. Ada Abeene, gave Ihe de votionals, reading Mark 11: 19-33, and a short devotional article en titled "Faith in God." This was followed by prayer. Sewing was enjoyed by the wo men. Here's a recipe very pooular in the central part of the U.:ited States. Dr.SO urillinf fvi.M- tuino for n.ck rtgion and bedy cavity of 4-pound New York dr.itM cnicx.ni Four tablespoons fat, Vt cup minpMt nninn. 1 cun diced celery. 4 cups bread cubes, firmly packed. 1 teaspoon salt, 4 teaspoon peuuci, 4 teaspoon poultry seasoning, 1 to 1 cup stock, water or milk. Cook onion and celery in fat over low heat, stirring occasionally, un til onion is soft, but not browned. Meanwhile, blend seasonings with bread cubes. Add onion, celery and fat. Blend. Pour the stock over sur face, stirrina lightly. Add more seasoning as desired. Note: For eiblet dressing, brown chopped cooked giblets in fat before onion and celery are added. Proceed as above. Grace White, food editor of Fam ily Circle Magazine, has, a new idea. She likes to roast her chick en cut in serving pieces. She goes even further. Sometimes she browns the pieces in butter lightly, then pours a rich popover batter in a shallow pan and lays the browned pieces of chicken in it. She bakes it in a moderately hot oven. It's wonderful puffy, brown and crumblyl Serve it with a cream giblet gravy. Her roast chicken barbecue is novel too. She roasts it in serving pieces and keeps basting it with a barbecue sauce. Now just imag ine thii with a mountain of mashed potatoes! Mashed potatoes but give them loving care Willie's way. Willie cooked for us in Georgia one win ter. Her husband doubled as but; ler and assistant potato masher. Dry boiled potatoes until white as cotton, mash with no mercy and beat and beat and beat with nothing but a sterling silver fork that was Willie's cabalistic for mula. It works. Drain water off the potatoes the second they are done not one sec ond later. Set pot over low heat and dry the potatoes a long time, until the outside gets white and fluffy. Sprinkle with salt and ha!:e the pot. Then and then only is it time to call for Willie's husband with the strong right arm. Mash, use lots of butter and freshly ground black pepper and whip warm milk in gradually. Mow ; comes the beating and I mean 1 beating until those potatoes are light and smooth and almost like ; a souffle. Lowe, area rent director, stated today limited funds made available to the hous ing expediter's office require a drastic curtailment of operations. No field representative will be available for the Roseburg area during the month of June. If pend ing rent control legislation is acted upon favorably and funds are again made available lor ine agency, a reDresentative will be assigned to the Roseburg area on the first and third Wednesdays of each month. Office space may then again be available in the city hall with office hours from 2 to 8 p.m. on the first and third Wednesday's of each month. Bail Posted By Three On Drunkenness Charge Sheriff O. T. Carter reported Wednesday that Dorothy Dean Houser, 32, Roseburg, was releas ed from the county jail on $20 bail following her arrest by city police on a drunk charge. Carter also reported that Georgia Mae Maxon, Roseburg, was re leased from the county jail on $10 bail following her arrest by city police on a charge of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Carter also reported that Web ster Williams, 42, Myrtle Creek, was arrested by Deputy Sheriff Worrall on a charge of being drunk on a pub'ic highway. He was re leased on 15 bail. with roast chicken.
