Medford, Union Win Track Titles CORVALLIS. May 22P)-De- fending champions from Medford and Union recaptured state high school track and field honors here Saturday. Medford swept the class A for a third time and Union posted a sec ond straight victory in the class B finals of the two day meet. Two new class A records were posted, Dick Zimmerman ot La Grande took the high hurdles in 14.8 sec onds, one-tenth of a second better than the old mark set in 1938 and tied in 1946. Al Martin ot Cottage Grove ran the half mile in a record 1:59.9 minutes. The old mark was 2:00.4 minutes, set two years ago. John Henslee, pilot Rock, cupped a tenth of a second off the old class B low hurdle record for a new time of 24.5 seconds. Lloyd Powell, Triangle Lake, equalled the class d 100 yard dash at 10.6 sec onds. The order of finish in class B: Union 63, Rogue River 45, Pilot Rock 40. University of Oregon track and field runners walked off with the northern division coast conference meet here Saturday with a 17W point margin over the favored Uni versity of Washington Huskies. The Ducks didn't even bother to enter the final mile relay. The victors were never pressed after the first three events. They went on to take seven firsts and failed to score in only three events the shot put, high jump and the relay. The day had other surprises besides the final tally. Idaho's Warren Johanson, fav ored in the mile, tumbled on the final turn and finished well be hind as Oregon s Jack Hutchins romped in with a 4:18.3. time. Woodley Lewis and Peter Mundle snared the broad jump and two- mile events for Oregon, Lewis go ing 23 feet 8 inches and Mundle winning in 9:32.4. Two records were broken. Dick uoyie ot Montana tossed the dis cus 164 and 810 feet to break the 21 -year-old mark of 157 feet, 2 inches set by Ed Moeller of Ore gon. Washington's Jack Burke did the high hurdles in 14.3 seconds, clip ping one-tenth of a second from the mark of another Washington performer, Steve Anderson. Bill Van Horn placed third in his qualifing heat in the century. Medford's sensational track star, Jack Morris, won the event with Portland's Roosevelt high school star, Jim Anderson, running a close second. Purdy believes that if the In dians' 100 yard dash man had run in some otner neat, ne wouio have qualified. Jim Kemp ran fourth in his Quali fied heat in the 440 yard dash. Swanson, Lincoln of Portland, took first place'honors in Kemp's quali fing head and Smithpeter of Baker placed second. - In runnning the preliminary race, Kemp was boxed on the back stretch which may have cost him a possible qualification. Fuidy reported that the meet was very well officiated. The Roseburg track coach also stated that he believed the competition this year was tougher than 1949 state track competition. Reserves Claim Moral Victory On Duck Grid EUGENE, May 22 (B The re serves claimed a moral victory to-, day over the regulars despite a 21-21 deadlock in Saturday's Uni versity of Oregon spring football finale. The green-clad reserves, paced by fullback Carl Ervin's two touch downs, tied the score on a pass from a sophomore quarterback Cal Dunham to Monte Brethauer.
